We loved this hotel. We loved Ghent! The staff, our room, the cocktail bar were all fantastic. Our room was 2 storey with the shower upstairs which was quite fun. We loved the honesty bar in one of the turrets. This place has so much character.

Room Tip: I'm sure all rooms are lovely

I didn't sleep in the hotel. We went to the The Cubler bar. The most beautifull bar in Gent, with the worst service. It was 12 o'clock and there were only 2 people. This is not surprising when you know that you have to wait at least 10 minutes for your drinks. The drinks are presented without any snacks ! But you have to pay 16,5€ for a gin tonic. A good advise for the Staff, take good people, who know something about drinks. Also take spirits of the Flanders such as Jenever of Filliers, gin of The Booze Store (they produce the best gin of the world "The Matterhorn), ...

This hotel is what brought us to Ghent in the first place and it did not disappoint. It opened a few months and is owned by Zanier, a boutique hotelier with a handful of wonderful properties we first discovered in Siem Reap when we stayed at their Phum Baitang resort last fall. The 1898 The Post is located smack in the middle of Ghent on the banks of the river and backs on to a major square filled with shops, bars and restaurants. As the name suggests, the hotel has been created inside an old, grand gothic revival post office and is beautifully designed and layered with photography, maps, art, books, board games and quirky, well chosen “vintage” objects many of which you can buy at pretty reasonable prices. The main drawing room has a well-stocked and expertly run bar which doubles as the breakfast room. Here each morning we scarfed down a delicious selection of fruits, cereals, meats, cheeses as well as individually prepared egg dishes from an open kitchen. The staff at this hotel are as good as you kind find anywhere. Thoughtful, proactive and bursting with pride to work at the new place in town. Dinner reservations, a tour guide, a late check-out, nothing was a problem. If you are going to Ghent (and if you can you should it’s one of the nicest little European towns we’ve visited) stay here. Gripes: the main thing you should watch out for is some of the rooms are duplexes with the loo and seating area downstairs and the bedroom and shower upstairs. It’s quite a cute design fix for an old building and was ok for a couple of nights but would get dull to deal with for a longer visit or if stairs were a problem for you specify a different room. Minor gripe: The lighting in the bar needs to be a 20% dimmer in the evenings and finding the entrance when you arrive should have better signage. We also learned too late of a gorgeous dishonesty bar for guests tucked into one of the building’s towers. Actually, this bar was so welcoming we decided it was probably best we didn’t find it earlier:-) Something to look forward to next time we visit which we hopefully will soon.

The hotel is full of artifacts from the old days and is beautifully decorated. They offered a parking (indoor) a couple of blocks away for €20 per night. If you have big suitcases you may need a shuttle.
The room we got was also very nice with a huge flat screen tv. Because of the huge ceiling hight, the shower and wash basin was one stairs up on a landing overlooking the beds. Down below was a WC, but I cannot understand how any architect can design a WC without a wash basin to wash your hands! To do that you have to run up the stairs to the landing!!!!!! What a misser!
You would have gotten 5 stars otherwise!

We stayed at this hotel on March 31 and wish we had been able to stay longer. We were in town for the Flanders Cyclo and arrived with two very dirty bikes. Which was no problem. Our room wasn’t ready as there was some kind of mix up. The front desk was rather mortified and extremely apologetic. They assured us our room would be ready in 15 min. While we waited they found us a place in the bar area, which is gorgeous, and offered us delicious cocktails on the house. In no time we were informed our room was ready and our bags and bikes had been delivered. But we were so comfortable and enjoying the lounge we stayed to finish our drinks. The lounge scene is chic, timeless, and clearly a hotspot in town.

We were in the Carriage room, located on the main floor. It is a duplex in that the sitting area, mini bar, toilet are downstairs, bed/shower sinks upstairs. Lovely view from both floors. Bed super comfortable. Shower excellent. The entire hotel is divinely done. I think our favorite part of the stay was our late 0100 nightcap in the Honest Bar. Where you drink from decanters of scotch, bourbon etc and you are expected to honestly report what you drink. Bloody fantastic space.

Other notes. The breakfast experience was first class. Made to order omelets. All the continental fixings. Superb cappuccino. We called ahead and they provided us with a parking space at a garage near by (BePark - Sint-Michielsstraat), can’t remember the cost but normal price. I highly recommend this hotel; the service, space and location are truly excellent and look forward to staying there again. Thank you to all the staff for your incredible hospitality.

Room Tip: The carriage room has two floors so not ideal for someone with mobility issues.
