“Wonderful hosts, fascinating old style apartment in quite but central location.”

Simon and Gisele are generous and helpful hosts - absolutely outstanding.
The apartment is historic but extremely spacious and comfortable. If you want something different that gives you a taste of living in old Amsterdam in a fascinating building this is for you. Spacious, light and quite.

“An authentic apartment”

My partner and I stayed for a few days and had the most wonderful time there! The decor is a mix of 1920's and 1950's! We felt very relaxed with the surrounding! On arrival we were greeted by the land lady which was most pleasant. They she showed us around the apartment! She also provided fresh cheese, yogurt, milk, eggs and fresh oranges to make orange juice with the electric squeezer provided! There was also white bathrobes which I found useful! Lots of toilet rolls and kitchen rolls were also provided along with soap and shower gel! On the dining table were a huge amount of information in leaflet form to provide us with a Guide as to see and so in and around Amsterdam! The apartment is set on a quiet and pretty street just off the canal! The shops and bars are all within a few minuites walk! When walking to dam suare it took us roughly about 15 minutes along many beautiful canals! We had our friends up on one of the nights for a Lovely Chinese meal and enjoyed sitting at the dining table in the apartment! A nice walk in to Vondel Park on the Sunday was just the best! I would highly recommend the sunbird apartment as we enjoyed our stay very much!

“Authentic Amsterdam Experience”
Reviewed 29 May 2014 for a stay in May 2014

The apartment was situated in a lovely, quiet neighborhood, but very conveniently located to transportation. The apartment was comfy and our host made us feel extremely welcome. Our fridge was stocked with many goodies, so that one did not have to run to a market, first thing. The kitchen had all sorts of cooking utensils, glassware and dishes. We actually cooked breakfast a few times.
There is one caveat: the stairs are numerous, steep and winding. One must be in decent shape to maneuver. Small luggage is advised.

Liked best: We enjoyed the authentic feel of staying in an older rowhouse. We felt less like tourists, and more like we were staying at a friend's home.

We guess by now it's time for a reaction by ours. Whoever comes to visit Amsterdam should know Amsterdam is a beautifull city and a old city. The city center is for 95% built with houses down from the 16th century till about 1900. And all the land had to be conquered from the water. So all, indeed all, Amsterdam houses are relatively narrow, with not much space for the staircases, so foreigners call our steps steep. We, the Dutch, are not especially known as a very sportive or trained people, though many of us till in their eighties walk up these stairs daily, with all their daily shoppings!!! Probably this will also explain to you and you all do wonder about this, why all the houses in the city center have hooks just below the roof: these hooks serve for hoisting up our furniture into the different floors, since the staircases are too narrow and to steep for this job!!! So if you come to Amsterdam and prefer a nice apartment to a empty hotel room be aware all, indeed all, Amsterdam houses have steep stairways. You know all hotel rooms are alike, but every apartment is different. It all depends on what you wish!!! Anyhow, you all are welcome if we have availability. See you, Gisèle and Simon

“Very comfortable and excellent hospitality”

We rented the apartment for three nights to do a little Amsterdam sightseeing before moving on to business elsewhere in Europe. The unit was large -- my guess between 50 and 60 sq. m., with the bedroom at the entrance and the living space (including kitchen) behind. Cross-ventilation was superb, the neighborhood was very quiet, and the bed was enormous and comfortable, making for comfortable sleeping. The overall flavor of the apartment could be described as "1960s lived-in" (but very clean), with shelves stocked with an eclectic collection of books and DVDs, the kitchen stocked with all the necessary tools to prepare full meals, and the refrigerator stocked with fruit, cheese, and other items supplied by the very gracious proprietor to get you started. A large Albert Heijn supermarket was about a 5 minute walk away. Public transportation was easy, with tram 4 (to the central station) and tram 10 (looping around the canal) one street away. The two negatives were a tight circular staircase to reach the apartment on the second floor, which was tricky to navigate when carrying luggage. (No problem without luggage.) The other issue was that one has to step outside the apartment door into the little-used hallway to enter the WC/bath. We knew this in advance and brought along bathrobes, although it turned out that the owner supplied bathrobes for his guests. We never ran into another soul making the 2.5 m transit from the apartment to the WC.

We guess by now it's time for a little reaction on the steps to our apartment.
If you read some of the reviews on our apartment, you will see as well some people write about our steps. Whoever comes to visit Amsterdam should know Amsterdam is a beautiful and an old city. The houses in the city centre were 95% constructed (on wooden pillars) from the 16th century till about 1900. And all the land had to be reclaimed from the water. So all, indeed all, Amsterdam houses are relatively narrow, with not much space for the staircases, so foreigners call our steps steep. We, the Dutch, are not especially known as a very sportive or athletic people, though many of us up till our eighties walk up these stairs daily, with our daily shop!!
