The room itself was comfortable but quite minimal. In terms of the positives, the hotel is right by Dam Square and close to Amsterdam Centraal. The breakfast was also really good and filling. However, the lights in the room were very dim, so it was very difficult to see things at night. In addition, the walls are quite thin, so you hear everything from people talking, doors opening and closing, and people having sex in nearby rooms. Aside from those things, it is not a bad place to stay, and I would return.

There were four of us - dad and three daughters (15, 10 and 8) and we stayed in two twin rooms either side of the corridor.

Room one had a view over the street - sure there was some street noise but that’s to be expected. The girls only mentioned the street noise on one evening at 3am. It’s a party city, no big deal.

Room two was looking into the middle of the building, not much to look at but also no noise.

Upon entering the rooms there was a 1m square landing after which a short flight of 10 steps into the room.

One bed was under the window, the other under the stairs. Both were narrower than a standard single bed but sufficient - I’m 100kg and 193cm and I slept well. The layout was the same in both rooms.

There was an adequately sized bathroom with toiletries and a shower.

The WiFi was strong and consistent.

The shower had enough power but the flow was unpredictable without consistency in temperature however the girls never complained, so maybe I’m just too delicate.

The breakfast was the reason for dropping a point. There were sausages, eggs (scrambled and boiled), muffins, croissants, toast, jams, yoghurts, meats and cheese. Sounds ok right? I’d say it was ok and for the price of the stay it was sufficient and offered value however I would have liked more - on reading this back I’m not clear in my review, it just wasn’t everything I had hoped for. The staff in the restaurant were polite and helpful.

Indeed, the staff in the hotel were consistently polite and caring and made us feel welcome.

We initially booked for just one night and then extended to three nights as we felt comfortable.

The location is very central, ideal for a short stay.

Close to everything you’d want to see. We also walked to the zoo and the Van Gogh museum and both were within 25 mins of the hotel.

There is a convenience store within 3 minutes walk to top up on snacks and a Primark and a TK Maxx to top up on forgotten clothing.

I thought it was great value for money and would happily stay again.

For reference my typical holiday is five star Dubai. One needs to manage one’s expectations when coming to an expensive city and you won’t be disappointed with the Rho Hotel.
