We have just returned from a week here. It really is a special place - beautifully and faithfully restored and incredibly peaceful. The mornings and early evenings in particular are just stunning with all the sounds of birds and insects and the views across the valley.
The staff are incredibly friendly and helpful and proud (quite rightly) of the amazing hamlet. Food is also spectacular and the Monday night pizza was best ever tasted!
We didn’t mind the drive in and out on the 2k road - in fact it was quite fun but might be a challenge if you don’t like driving too much.
Also great location for exploring Tuscany and easy to get into good train routes too from Cortona.
Our only negative (and it was a big one unfortunately with three young kids) was the number of horse flies. Apparently there had been a problem with the spraying system just before we arrived which meant more than usual - but we couldn’t use the pool because of them. Couldn’t imagine sitting outside for long either. However the houses are well netted and we had no issues inside the house. Also there is only one pool now - the smaller child’s one on website has been covered over. (The remaining pool is lovely though)
Apart from that it’s a magical place - maybe just not for young families.
Stayed here for a week and the view across the valley is worth the drive. The hamlet is in the heart of Tuscany and convenient for visiting Florence, Sienna, Assisi, Cortona, Pienza and Montepulciano amongst others. The house itself was very quaint and what you would imagine to be traditional Tuscan style with furnishings to match. In the summer there is a very nice pool and outdoor seating area. The restaurant provides excellent home cooked food every day other than Tuesday and the pizza night on Monday is not to be missed. There is a small shop on site for good quality essentials and the rooms have complimentary toiletries if you forget anything. There are steps and the car park is away from where you live but you can offload and then park up. There is also a launderette with washing machine, dryer and iron. Each home has an outdoor seating area and sun loungers. The main thing to be aware of is the road to get there - it is single track with passing places and winds up and down hills so if you are phased by this, Borgo Di Vagli may not be for you but if you don’t mind, the reward when you get there is wonderful and peaceful views in the middle of nowhere. We would definitely come back again and recommend to friends
We actually visited with another couple way back in 2007, not long after the renovations had been completed. I saw an article in the US about the project and just HAD to check it out. I actually had to dig deep to make contact for booking (I even posted something here in the Cortona forum to find contact information). We stayed for 5 nights and our experience remains fresh in our minds and warm in our hearts.
Borgo di Vagli is a VERY special "village" accommodation and provides a special experience. We loved the authentic restoration and the attention to details in our 2 bedroom villa. It was a pleasure to have breakfast under the wisteria covered trellis. It was lovely to relax by the pool after touring all day. The restaurant (that also offered cooking classes) was outstanding and special. I wonder if Massimiliano is still there??? These are markings of a wonderful Tuscan vacation.
My only minuses might have been addressed since our stay. There were many bees by the pool and I have an allergy so I had to limit what time of day I could sit out. When we stayed, the road to the Borgo from the main highway was a windy, narrow, long dirt path with no lighting which made it difficult to come back after eating a dinner out in Cortona. Neither would make us not return again in the future but I would consider these concerns should you be sensitive to these issues.
A fabulous restored village . Simply beautiful . Food is amazing and service excellent . Close to pretty much anything as long as you have a rental car . 20 minutes to Cortona . 90 minutes to Florence and the airport . Truly a unique Tuscan experience !
Secluded, yet modern. So friendly! Just a great way to experience Italy at its finest. This is not a city hotel, this is living in the Italian countryside, exploring small towns and enjoying the "hamlet" life as it was meant to be. The accommodations were perfect with everything we needed and the staff was so helpful and attentive.
