“Fabulous House, Wonderful Town.”
Reviewed 6 August 2012 for a stay in July 2012

Our family stayed at Casa Ella during the last week of July 12. We we're bowled over by the house, its a heady mix of ultra modern (to die for kitchen) whilst retaining many of the original features, the marble staircase being the best of these. The Air con was a blessing in 40c heat, the roof terrace during the cooler evenings was a delight, you can hear the chatter & wandering musicians from the street below, soaking up the unique atmosphere of Taormina. The property location is perfect for exploring the town, the people who run the Deli next door are very special, so helpful and incredibly friendly, the bakers on the other side we're incredibly friendly too, the daily offerings fresh and tasty, make sure to try the doughnuts and handmade gnocchi which is made on the premises. Make sure to hunt out the Mercato Comunale if your self catering, lots of fresh fruit & veg, fishmonger and butchers with good prices. The Bam Bar which is almost opposite the property is as good as everyone says (review coming shortly) a tasty treat when the heat is a little too much and a great after dinner treat. A little tip - if your off to the beach over a weekend in peak season make sure to call a couple of days in advance to book your space, otherwise you may be turned away. The owner was attentive & speedy in his commnication with us, booking was an effortless process and our deposit was returned most swiftly. We hope to return in the future and will heartily recommend this property to all.

“A Wonderful Place to Stay”
Reviewed 8 July 2012 for a stay in June 2012

We spent two weeks at Casa Ella in June and had the most wonderful holiday. Casa Ella is beautiful. It has been renovated to an extremely high standard by the owners. It is very spacious with a cool marble hallway and staircase up through the centre of the house. It is very tastefully decorated and furnished, and mixes modern contemporary with lovely period tiled floors and fireplaces. Every room has air-conditioning which was wonderful when the weather was so hot. We loved the sound system that is wired into every room- we had traditional Italian music resonating throughout the house! The roof terrace has it's own kitchen/laundry room which was very useful. We spent many evenings up on the roof having a glass of wine. The house was very well equiped with everything we could possibly need.
The location in Taormina couldn't be better. It is a few minutes walk from the Corso Umberto and the Amphitheatre and about ten minutes from the cable car which we used to go down to the beautiful Mazzaro beach and the Isola Bella.
We went to the bakers next door to buy the delicious 'cornetti' every morning for breakfast. Each morning we would open the patio doors and smell the delicious aromas wafting up as they baked and it was impossible to resist! The deli downstairs was also very handy for essentials. The Bam Bar opposite is a great place to sit and have a granita and watch the world go by. The Myle restaurant next door does some great Sicilian dishes and the staff are lovely- really friendly. Such wonderful places literally on the doorstep!
The owners provided us with lots of useful information and were very helpful before and during our stay. We emailed and texted them on a number of occasions and they always answered us very quickly. The check in process was very smooth. We had flight delays and arrived late in the evening but were met outside the property and were given the keys and shown around. Our deposit was returned swiftly.
I would recommend Casa Ella very highly. It is excellent value for money and I cannot imagine finding a better house to rent in Taormina. It really is beautiful and is in the perfect spot to just wander in and out of the town. We loved it and would definitely like to return.

“Fabulous apartment, questionable business practices from owner”

Apartment was beautifully appointed, comfortable, luxurious & in fabulous central location, very satisfied with the appartment. The owner however was quite difficult to deal with. The first "red flag" was his response to my request for a receipt for payment, his response was if his emails were not enough "it is not my problem" and he never did provide an official receipt for our payments, a normal business practice when money exchanges hands. Our second issue with him was his withholding of part of our security deposit to cover his bank fees, this is despite having sent us an email post receiving our security deposit stating "This amount is fully refundable back to you subject to no damage", appears the rules change once he has your money in his hands. In monetary terms this was a small amount, but unfortunately left us disappointed and feeling ripped off.

“Chic townhouse with plentiful amenities”
Reviewed 10 March 2012 for a stay in February 2012

We stayed at this lovely house for a week and had a great time. The bakers and deli are either side of the front door with many tempting treats as well as the essentials. To complete the foody experience it is worth seeking out the covered market off St Pancreas square just below the Messina gate. We didn't need to hire a car as the public transport was very adequate (except for the strike on Thursday and the cable car being closed for maintenance). Of course the main attraction is Taormina itself which is a delight for all the senses. Finally, we must record how friendly and helpful the local people are and how well they speak English!

“Excellent location”
Reviewed 14 November 2011 for a stay in September 2011

We stayed at Casa Ella in September this year. The house is as pictured: beautiful, modern and spacious, with a full kitchen, 2 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms with showers, 2 small balconies facing the street and a full roof deck that is especially lovely in the evening. The location of the house is excellent---a few feet away from the Corso Umberto itself, as well as Porto Messina (where you enter the main part of Taormina). There are very good restaurants and cafes located as soon as you step out the door. We enjoyed dinner at Myle restaurant, cappucinos and cornettos at Bam Bar and Licchio's, as well as many others. We were able to pick up a few kitchen supplies at the deli downstairs. The house also has some nice amenities, including rainfall showers, a built-in sound system throughout the house, laundry, air-conditioner in every room (even the kitchen!), and the rooms themselves are large and spacious. Original tile flooring decorates the rooms, and some cool marble decorate the stairs. There is ample storage and tasteful furniture in each room. Plenty of bedding, dinnerware and other basics are included.

The only disappointing experience we had was during the check-in process. We had instructions to text the owner upon arrival, but the SIM card we purchased for our phone could not be activated til evening. We tried calling the owner (who lives in the UK) repeatedly but he never answered. Finally we sought out an Internet cafe and contacted him via email to explain why we couldn't text him, to no avail. After nearly 2 hours of this, our SIM card finally kicked in and we were able to get a live response. Once in touch, the owner provided us with directions to the house---nothing like trying to figure out where you're supposed to be heading via directions by phone in an unfamiliar town. ('Head towards the taxi stand'---turns out there were two and we were going in circles for a bit.) In hindsight, directions or a map to the apartment provided ahead of time would have been helpful. The cellphone issue will not affect all travelers, just those who have to buy SIM cards. It would have been simpler to directly contact the person who eventually hands you your keys, but I'm sure the owners have their reasons for their chosen set-up; it's just unfortunate that the process did not run smoother for us.

Lastly, it seems that unlike the other reviewers on here, we were one of the few folks who didn't receive our deposits in time (within 2 weeks of check-out). After contacting the owner for inquiry, we received a reasonable explanation and eventually received our deposit about a month after we checked out. All other communication, during and after the booking process, was timely and thorough though---every email was answered immediately.

Overall, we would not hesitate to recommend the house, as it is an excellent value for the money, with so many extra benefits, but I would recommend a better arrangement for checking in. (The latter is probably not an issue for renters who opt for the airport pickup service.)
