On holiday in Catania, I booked the Terrazza sui Crociferi restaurant for a meal with my girlfriend with the plan to propose to her. The good news is that that went well and she said yes!

Actually, the good news doesn't stop there. I actually only chose the restaurant on the evening before the meal, and as I don't speak any Italian I decided to email them rather than try to arrange it via telephone. Seeing as they didn't receive the message until the morning of the intended meal, I was very impressed with the speed of the reply and with the service at every step of the way.

The two staff members whom I spoke to via email - Renato and Alessandra - were very helpful, and not only helped by suggesting not only special menu choices but 'extras such as flowers to be waiting on our arrival (they also offered a good deal on a suite at the hotel, but I declined this as we already had our hotel booked for the night) but they were also accommodating when I had to move the booking on by half an hour when we got stuck at Taormina railway station during the afternoon. Suffice to say that I was getting quite nervous but the staff at the Royal did more than could have been expected to take as much stress as possible out of the occasion.

On arrival, I was a bit surprised to find that we were the only customers present but actually that only added to the atmosphere - and, frankly, more fool the people who weren't there.

The location is stunning with windows all around and a lovely view of a neighbouring church the name of which sadly eludes me, as well as a typical and lively Catanian street scene.

The food - for the record, I had spaghetti with mussels and clams, tuna steak with caponata (simply the best tuna I have ever tasted), and then chocolate souffle which was a great end to the meal despite my now fiance being unable to finish hers due to being a bit overcome by emotion. She had spaghetti with artichokes, followed by sea bass, and then the aforementioned souffle) - was wonderful. The wine was also pretty good too - as well as the complimentary welcome Aperol spritz which was good enough that my girlfriend/ fiance ordered another straight after - which helps, certainly with the nerves on my part...

But pride of place has to go to Faisal, our waiter for the evening, who instinctively displayed exactly the right mix of genuine friendliness and attentiveness whilst still leaving us to have our privacy when needed. He was even very patient with a couple of tweaks to the dishes on the menu to suit our tastes which really helped the night along.

Perhaps this restaurant is a bit pricey for the average tourist who isn't planning on a special occasion, but honestly for a price only a little over an average meal out in the UK, it really ought to be better used than we saw tonight. What you get is something truly over and above the ordinary and it is the kind of night which would make any holiday extra special, proposal or not. Honestly, anyone who doesn't go is missing out.

Please, make time and budgetary space for a night at Terrazza sui Crociferi when in Catani. You will not be disappointed.

And for my part, many thanks to Renato, Alessandra, and Faisal for their significant part in a very special evening for both of us.

We were here for 5 nights, having booked through Easyjet holidays. This was a small hotel, having less than 20 rooms, but it gave the feeling of space with a very large breakfast room, complete with outdoor seating. Our room (209) was also quite big and had its own private balcony with a table and chairs, perfect for a late afternoon glass of prosecco to watch the swallows flitting around. I would describe the place as having faded glory. The wifi was generally quite good but did cut out now and then.

Thereception staff were incredibly helpful and spoke English (much to our relief as our Italian was very limited).

We only had breakfast at the hotel though evening meals were available. Breakfast itself consisted of a variety of breads and croissants plus other assorted sweet pastries, fresh fruit, yoghurts, cold meats and cheeses. Omelettes were also available on request. Our waiter at breakfast time was delightful and made the most wonderful coffees!

A couple of negative points: the air conditioning was ineffective. It seemed to be set at 25 degrees and so we slept with the balcony door open all night. I am not sure what it would be like in the middle of summer. The shower was also tiny and each time I turned round, I managed to knock the handle and turn the water off. Although there was a lift, we used the stairs most of the time and the corridor was dark and the spiral staircase at night was not well lit.

All in all, however, I would be pleased to return here and the location itself was excellent - a few minutes down onto the Via Etnea, the main street, and a similar time to the cathedral and the square.

As the hotel was at the top of a hill, this might not be the best choice for somebody with limited mobility as there was a series of steps to climb in order to reach it.

Room Tip: 209 was at the back of the hotel with a balcony.

We booked the hotel for it's location and price ($99/nt including a 10euro restaurant credit) and were amazed at the charm of the hotel. It is a converted 18th century royal palace, with a courtyard in the center. I believe the other three sides of the old palace have been converted to apartments. The hotel is all old world charm, with an excellent staff that was extremely helpful to us with directions and area information throughout our stay. We used the 10 euro credit towards dinner one night at the hotel restaurant and had pumpkin ravioli and a mixed salad. The ravioli was very tasty and the salad huge.

We had a large covered balcony overlooking the courtyard, which was great for relaxing in the evening. The hotel also has a fantastic rooftop balcony accessible from the 3rd floor. This balcony has a view of the sea, and an amazing view of Mt Etnea, which was probably one of the best pictures I have from the trip.

The hotel is just a couple blocks off the shops on Via Etnea, a short walk to Piazza Duomo, and a shorter walk to some great restaurants and cafes on Via Salita San Camillo.

We stayed here for 4 nights and it was a perfect choice of hotel. We had a very spacious room with a very comfy bed and room looked onto courtyard which was very quiet.
The staff were lovely on reception and spoke perfect english and always happy to chat and advise on anything.
Breakfast was on the first floor and was a lovely room, the young lady on breakfast duty was absolutely charming and a real asset to the hotel. There was everything you could want, my husband had a freshly made omelette everyday.
There was good fast free wifi.
The hotel was central for shops, restaurants and attractions.
The hotel is up a hill but okay if you take your time, I enjoyed the exercise!
I will be back as 4 nights was not long enough to see Scily!
