Formerly the Grand Excelsior I guess this has become another acquisition for the Mercure chain. Internally it is quite palatial with quality fixtures and fittings of yesteryear. Sadly these are starting to date and fray around the edges but seem to being replaced by the new owners. The rooms are quite spacious, well appointed and very clean. The bathrooms also have complimentary toiletries. There is a fridge and flat screen TV. The breakfast was ok in terms of fare but the staff were more keen on cleaning tables than replenishing the food and drinks. Throughout the hotel with the exception of the reception staff, they were miserable. There was never a greeting, warm or otherwise and never once did any of them smile. It is these touches that let the hotel down. The hotel is situated on a main upmarket shopping street but there were several homeless people begging and sleeping immediately outside the hotel entrance. A plus is the hop on hop off sightseeing buses stops outside the hotel. All in all though it was ok- just More
