We booked this Hotel as an end to our amazing 3 week tour of Italy. We didn't want to stay in Cagliari as no beach and decided against Poetto as had been described as where youngsters flock over the summer, so thought we'd stay in between. This Hotel isn't easy to get to via public transport. I contacted the Hotel on the day we were flying but the receptionist didn't speak much English. When we arrived at the airport we were told that there were no more buses into Cagliari centre and the next train would be over 2 hours so we got a taxi which cost 25 Euros. Cagliari seemed nice however the long stretch up to the Hotel was like a building site, with disused buildings and was very unsightly. The Hotel itself, was (as someone else described) like an Italian Faulty Towers. The building is very dirty and in serious need of good lick of paint. We checked in, again with the women who didn't speak much English. She failed to tell us about Breakfast, wifi and with no lift she climbed a flight of stairs and just pointed down the hallway to our room. The door was wooden and didn't really lock securely, the room itself was big but dingy. We had paid extra for a balcony with a sea view but although the sea view was nice the balcony was dirty and with only 1 seat. We went back to reception and asked where we could eat and were pointed to the direction of the restaurant. I asked if there was a beach bar and was told no. The menus were in Italian and all faded so couldn't make out what was on offer. Ordered what I though was a chicken salad but was octopus which I couldn't eat but another table ended up taking this off us, kindly. Upon walking around the hotel, we found that, there was an actual little beach bar / cafe. I have to say this was probably the best thing about this hotel. The staff were very efficient, very friendly and helpful. We had toasties and cocktails which were amazing, and the views here over to the lighthouse were actually beaufiful. The ice cream here was actually amazing! There's a private beach, (as they call it) but it's actually a sunbathing area with about 8 loungers (you have to get there early as they go fast) but it's all rocky. You can get into the water, slowly and the water is really nice but not the safest. There's public beach near which is nice but gets really busy. If you want to go anywhere you have to get 2 buses. We instead walked down the hill (which took about 25 minutes) and then got a bus. We walked to Poetto but took a good 45 minutes at least. The buses are not reliable and some nights we waited but none came and couldn't get a taxi so were left walking the 45 minute journey home which isn't very nice walking up the hill towards the hotel with the deserted buildings. Poetta is nice during the day, and at night has some night bars with live music but only a couple and no real centre as such. The more we walked it was like ghost town and felt very eery. We went into Cagliari one night, which was ok but very deprived and a lot of graffiti. I'd heard Sardinia was beautiful with lovely beaches but I think these are mostly up in the north of the island. We were here 4 nights and there was building work going on in one of the rooms so were wakened up early every morning. Also the breakfast was very bland with one cereal and bread and cheese. I was very dissapointed with this Hotel and was not the end we had planned for our teip. From this experience I would not return to this part of the island and definitely would not stay here again.

Room tip: Would not stay here again

Hotel Calamosca was graded three star - one of the reasons why we booked it for a two week stay in July 2016. Our first impression was that the hotel room offered on the third floor had a much lower standard than expected, but the view was great. We had to change room the other day due to terrible noise from the AC and a bed mattress which was worn out. The free wi-fi did not work in any other places than close to the reception area. The shower enclosure in the bathroom was near falling apart and some of the other appliances needed maintenance but it was not a problem that spoiled the pleasure that was offered by staying at this hotel. The staff was wonderful and always helpful and polite. The food offered for lunch and dinner in the restaurant was fair, but the restaurant area had a great location where you were offered a splendid view of the sea and the sunset in the evening, combined with a soothing breeze in the afternoon. Due to sharp stones and rocks it was sometimes difficult to get into the sea for swimming close to the hotel, but once in the temperature and the crystal clear water was a great pleasure. Connected to the hotel was an outside bar area (Bar Americana) with very nice and competent staff, as well as a great surrounding area with table service. The bus service for taking you in to Calgary was really good; inexpensive and efficient. All in all a very positive experience to stay at the hotel. In our view that place has a potential to become a top star hotel and resort given that more money is invested to upgrade the facilities. We recommend this place for anybody to enjoy the friendly atmosphere and the beautiful surroundings offered by this hotel.

Room tip: Rooms on the lower flood is upgraded and better than the third floor rooms.

To see the beauty of this hotel all you have to do is look at the photos that have been posted on Tripadvisor! The little things that are tired about some of the rooms are easily overlooked when discovering the rest of this special place! (The air conditioning is great!) We have stayed here as a family as well as a couple for many years. We wouldn't even think of staying anyplace else since we found Hotel Calamosca! Oh the views!!! The sea water is so, so blue! The air is wonderful. There are refurbished rooms as well as older rooms that have a nice retro feel. Try to reserve what suits your needs best. A nice Italian breakfast is usually included with SUPERB coffee or hot chocolate made to order the way you like! The Ristorante is always wonderful, with a nice choice of different Italian foods. (Seafood changes each night because it is all local & fresh!) Be sure to make reservations as it can really fill up on any evening/night because the locals like to dine regularly and often have celebrations there. There is a scenic view (Beautiful sunset!!) from the ristorante as well as the cocktail bar up above. To reach it - walk through the tranquil garden grounds below or you can reach it on the hotel level from the front door of the hotel. The side beach does fill up early, yet the garden grounds have a beach and supply lounges with less of a crowd most days. Also a little bar is usually open during early afternoon in the garden area.

Room tip: Refurbished rooms as well as older rooms that have a nice retro feel. Try to reserve what suits your needs best. No elevator. Three levels.

Yes, the Calamosca has clearly seen better days but our room was clean, adequate in every way and had a balcony overlooking the sea. The hotel has a small private beach - shallow for a way but deep water is accessible. We snorkelled near rocks and saw fish. There is a restaurant that seemed to be popular. Hotel has parking and if you want to visit the city - and you should - it's a short drive away. Wifi ok in reception area. It really worked for us - we felt we could not have made a better choice. If you want reasonable prices, you can't expect too much.

Room tip: Has to beachside.

This hotel has a lot of potential, it is tucked away in a quiet bay with spectacular views.

The hotel is in desperate need of a refresh but it is clean and simple. I had a room on the ground floor which, did have a brand new bathroom but the rest was very old.

Breakfast was very limited but the evening restaurant was lovely including the pizza. I would recommend dining on the balcony.

The beach is lovely but you can't get into the water unless you walk to the public beach which is minutes away. There are a lot of dangerous rocks along the waterfront immediately outside the hotel and whilst it is possible to swim from there, I found it to be a little dangerous getting in and out.

The hotel was a nice place to escape for a couple of days and a decent price. Its unlikely I will return but it made for a pleasant stay for one trip.
