We went to the Palazzo Leoni Montanari towards the end of a day of sightseeing when we were beginning to feel a bit exhausted. The loggia of Hercules revived us and the interior just got better and better. Late baroque, works of fantasy, wonderful architectural features, great frescoes and a very strong collection. There is a whole room of paintings by Pietro Longhi, he was a milestone in 18th C Italian painting, no one in Italy had painted like him - think Hogarth and Hayman. The Galleria della Verità is exuberant and over the top, impossible not to love. In a later room is an astonishing marble sculpture of the Fall of the Rebel Angels, containing 60 figures , exquisitely executed by Fasolato. A complete gem of a collection.

The Leoni Montanari is an interesting museum located in a quiet side street in central Vicenza. Just by chance, I went in a special day, when all the museums in town were open at night, which was a nice experience. The building is as atractive as its contents. Although its neo-classical façade looks a bit discreet, there is a lot of points of interest indoors: a beautiful patio, huge rooms with high ceilings, stucco decor, paintings, being the general style openly baroque. The contents are interesting too, as they are quite varied, combining Italian paintings, Greek ceramics, a vast collection of Russian icones...so its variety plus the fact of not being one of those tiring endless big museums makes Leoni Montanari a interesting visit.

A beautiful gallery in a stunning former palace the interior of the palace alone is worth visiting but a magnificent collection of art. The many glass chandlers were breathtaking.

This museum has a very interesting selection of greek-orthodox icons, which by themselves are worth a visit. There was a gorgeous temporary exhibit of greek ceramics too.

This was a surprising find and exceeded all our expectations. We spent a whole afternoon there. It’s included in the Vicenza Museum Card, which – alone, in my view – makes the card a good buy. We really liked everything the museum had to offer – the ancient Grecian pottery, the paintings and the icons.

The paintings are what one might reasonably expect in a major art gallery, but – and this was just our ignorance – we didn’t really expect to find such a high standard here. And the baroque ceilings in some of the rooms were just stunning.

The highlight of the museum for us, however, was the third floor, dedicated to an exhibition of Russian religious icons. We had never seen such a wide-ranging collection of icons before, and we took our time just slowly appreciating each of them. There seemed to be few, if any, other visitors, so we had the unexpected company of a security guard who discreetly – well, not that discreetly – watched our every move. Quite what he would have done if we had each gone our separate ways in the exhibition, is unclear, but we didn’t put it to the test … and we both just said a friendly “goodbye” as we left!

This is a must-see destination if you’re staying in Vicenza!
