We ate there twice during the days while we were in Vicenza last month. It's a bit hard to figure out the first time, especially for foreigners with little Italian skills. You might be taken to a table and you might find one yourself (based on how crowded it is). You grab your own cutlery. You then go to where the food is being prepared and order from the chalk boards and sometimes that gets difficult because it can be crowded. I found it very confusing the first time but I was intimidated because of my poor Italian language skills. Some food like the salads and desserts are sitting out. Meats need to be cooked so you order and then stand and wait. Get water, beer, wine, and soft drinks yourself. No one waits on you there except for the cooks.
All in all the food was fine and certainly affordable. You got exactly what you ordered. We went back two days later to try again and it was easier because we knew the routine by then. Certainly it was unique. I don't think we saw what looked like another foreigner in the joint but the folks who were there had, for the most part, been there before since they all knew what to do. In the long run, by the second time, it was fun. It might sound like cafeteria style but it was not quite that. We went for supper the first time and lunch the second time. Get there when it first opens and it might seem easier since it gets crowded soon.
