We wanted a change from the restaurant at our hotel, Le Charaban, and chose Le Bistrot, We were not disappointed. The locals eat there - always a good sign - and just off the tourist trail.

Warm welcome, attractive setting, amusing Google-translated menu, good Aostan food, good local wines, reasonably priced.

After a very long and tedious drive up from the Cote D'Azur we fell across this busy little bistrot in Aosta. What a lovely warm welcome and whilst we do not speak much Italian the service team were so helpful. We ended up having a mixed platter which was amazing value - good quality Italian style cuisine followed by a delicious pudding and coffees. It was truly the highlight of our day and such fantastic value. Not sure we will be passing that way again but to weary travellers following a similar route it is a superb oasis of calm and delightful service. Worth the turn off the autoroute!

We had a dinner for four with wine, no dessert and it cost Euros 120. The carpaccio (thinly sliced raw beef macerated in oil and herbs) was delicious and the spinach flan light and fluffy. The sliced pheasant breast was tender with a nice sauce. Pasta and Valle d'Aosta cold meats rounded out the meal. Most interesting among the vegetables served was a cooked white bean stew. The rest of the mixed vegetables were pretty straight forward. With the coffee came an ample choice of complimentary local liquors. The host and waiters were friendly and helpful in choosing the wine.

We thought the menu options were about right for a small restaurant that currently is enjoying a trendy following among the locals. Typical Valle d'Aosta fare can be had in most restaurants in Aosta but Le Bistrot offers a pleasant variation from many of the mainstream ones in centre town. Our friends told us that the bar serves a good fast food (Italian style) lunch but I haven't had that pleasure yet.

Easy to find just a couple minutes walk to the east of the Arco d'Augusto near the old Roman bridge.
