We found the check in staff needlessly rude, especially when they were at fault... which she didn’t like being shown.

The rooms are small and functional, unfortunately the ‘stylish’ floating toilet was coming away from the wall and you felt like a ski jumper waiting to jump when sitting on it (tilting down towards the floor) - it won’t be long until it rips right out of the wall.

We were also expected to spend our 2nd night with blood stained bed sheets, which I didn’t appreciate, the cleaning staff must have seen them, but chose not to change them.

The hotel bar closes promptly at midnight, but actually closes long before that if you’re wanting a simple beer, as they only have 12 glasses (as told to us by the bar staff) for large beers, and seem unable, or unwilling to collect and wash used ones!

We didn’t try the breakfast, as past visits to other Ibis hotels has shown these to be a waste of money, it may be different with this one.

Good location for anyone arriving to central station though...

Room Tip: Small rooms so don't take more than one suitcase if travelling as a couple!

Ibis Hotels are a perfect, no frills base for a holiday anywhere and Milan’s Central Hotel was no exception. Located approx 20 mins walk from Centrale FS train station and 5 mins walk from the Repubblica metro station, it’s ideally placed for visitors wishing to explore Milan or further afield using public transport. Having said that, we found that you could also easily walk to most tourist attractions including the Duomo which looks a long way down from the hotel on a map but is probably 30-45 mins walk along the Via Venezia.

We were upgraded to a ‘superior’ room but found that size came at a price since our super spacious room on the first floor was right next to the local tram line. Trams rattle through the city pretty much all night long so remember to pack a set of ear plugs for a quiet night’s sleep.

Free air conditioning was a bonus in Milan’s hot weather and so too was the MyAuchan supermarket (via Lazaretto) just around the corner from the hotel.

The hotel’s own bar and bistro although very reasonably priced compared to outside establishments let itself down by being understaffed and disorganised. Many visitors, including us, gave up queuing for a pint as staff appeared unable to cope with even the smallest number of orders.

Travellers should also be aware that:
- No tea/coffee making facilities are provided in your room so pack a travel kettle if you fancy a brew after a day’s sightseeing.
- City taxes – yes these may come as a surprise if like us you’d paid online (Booking.com) as they are not included in your advance bill but due when you check in. Taxes are 4 Euro per person per night so remember to factor this in when working out your spending money.
- Early check in – you can leave your luggage in a locked storage room if you happen to arrive early morning but you can’t check into your room early unless you’re prepared to stump up 15 Euros.
- For gadget heavy travellers, pack double plug adaptors as there are few power points in rooms.

Rooms whilst furnished in a very pleasant, modern style do not contain much in the way of storage for clothes. There was a small cupboard in a corner of our room but no chests of drawers to put your smalls in. I get round this using E-cubes (packing bags) which can be easily stacked on a table or chair.

Otherwise a very pleasant place to stay for a week in Milan.

Room Tip: If you're a light sleeper, ask for a room that does not face Via Lazaretto and is away from tram lines.
