People associate the name “Italian Riviera” with old world charm and luxury. The place where James Bond may be either on vacation or chasing bad guys who have lots of money. When my wife and I were looking for a hotel in Rapallo, the main city in the Italian Rivera, the Hotel Bristol with its well-known spa seemed like the perfect location to pamper ourselves. The first bit of bad news came when we were informed that the spa was closed due to upgrade and maintenance. No problem, there is plenty more luxury in Rapallo so a closed spa was not an issue. When we arrived to the hotel, our impression was that it was everything we expected and more. Beautiful entrance, the room was spacious and luxurious. Clean, beautiful furniture, great spa-like bathroom with a big bath tub and two separate and beautiful bathroom sinks. We were happy… until we realized the room shook with the awful noise and vibrations from the elevator motors every time elevators were used. Yes, the room was near (though not adjacent) to the elevator shaft and the noise from the elevator was really annoying. We requested a room change and they told us we would have to wait until the next day. So, our first night we were only able to go to sleep after elevator traffic quieted down after midnight, and of course we woke up to the noise of the elevators early in the morning. At lease they offered a great breakfast buffet with the room to make it worthwhile to get up so early. The next day we moved to another room. The farthest room from the elevator shaft they could find. Sadly it was a real downgrade. The room was less than half the size of the previous room, and instead of the luxurious bath tub we had one of those ultra small showers that require real contortionists to get in and out. That shower would have been fine in a 2 star hotel located in an old building in Rome or Florence… but not in relatively new hotel in The Riviera. Interestingly enough, we could still hear the elevators in this room, but not so loud they were annoying. This leads me to believe that the hotel staff are well aware of the elevator noise problem and when we complained about the noise they had to downgrade us instead of upgrade us to get us far enough from the source of the noise. The resto of our stay was in this small room. We felt more like third world country spies than like 007. My recommendation to the hotel, forget the renovation of the spa and use the money to get more modern elevators. Insulate the motors so their vibrations do not travel through the whole building. Bottom line, I cannot recommend this hotel nor would I stay there again. Perhaps after they renovate I would give it a consideration, but there are so many good hotels nearby, most likely I will stay away even if they claim they fixed the problem. I rate it “Average”, which is the average of “Excellent” for looks, feel and service and “Terrible” for not being able to sleep at night.

Room tip: Try to get one of the big rooms, but far from the elevator shaft.

This hotel is an interesting combination of old and new. While the building itself has historic charm, there is modern décor in the public areas. We had a large room with a balcony overlooking the sea. It was clean and comfortable. At first we were disappointed that we were a long walk from Rapallo on a busy road, but then we discovered a shortcut that was a moderate walk into the city and back. At breakfast there was a nice selection of hot and cold items.

Room tip: Room overlooking the sea

I was in charge of a custom tour we had with Globus. We had 86 in our group and stayed here after visiting Cinque Terre. My group loved both their rooms and the group dinner we had here. At the end of our tour, this hotel was their favorite. Thank you Grand Hotel Bristol!

Enjoyed a two night stay at this lovely property.
Stunning views over the swimming pool and beyond to the sea with villages across the bay. Efficient breakfast setup to enjoy a generous buffet of the typical American full breakfast. Comfortable rooms well maintained. About a 15 minute walk to town.
Enjoyed an evening meal at the upscale rooftop restaurant.( Le Cupole).
Fresh prawns with a ginger lime sauce first course followed by gnocchi with fresh pesto and spinach. Olive stuffed calamari started followed by pesto risotto with baby razor clams. Others enjoyed rabbit ragout over pasta and hanger steaks.
Enjoyable evening escaping watching the evening rains.

Came to this hotel as part of a group tour, but still got a sea view room, which was bright and roomy. This place truly makes you feel a part of the "Grand Tour"
Room and bathroom was spotless- and in good working order.
Staff friendly and helpful.
If you go to town, I recommend the ocean path, which is well used by walkers and bikes, and is lit at night. It also allows you to see properties you would otherwise miss.
Drink and food prices are high, but in a place of this caliber, expected.
Expectations were exceeded. Highly recommended.
