“Nice place, poor service”
Reviewed 11 October 2015 for a stay in September 2015

We stayed in an apartment with 3 kids ages from 5-11. The apartment was narrow as most places are there with entrance on one floor (after climbing up the hill and some stairs), the bedrooms and a bathroom on another floor and the kitchen/dining and spare bed on the top floor. If you have young children, they need to be careful on the marble stairs, especially when they are fairly narrow and the twist round a column.

The apartment was situated right next to the bell tower which starts donging every half hourly from 7am-8pm. There is a lovely view of the sea side from a distance from a couple of the windows. The place is otherwise quiet.

We were given 1.5 toilet rolls for a 4 night stay. Which given we had 3 females in the family, it was not quite enough. When we requested for more toilet rolls, they wanted to charge us extra. They finally reluctantly gave us one FOC with a warning that any subsequent roll will cost us. We started making more use of the bidet after that which was fine, but the lady could have explained it in a more kindly manner.

The ranghood light wasn't working making it hard to see what we were cooking in the evenings. The bathroom light also blew on day 2. The spare sofa bed in the kitchen/dining room was very uncomfortable - there was little softness left in the mattress and the central bar which ran from the top to bottom of the bed could be felt when lying down on your back. So one had to sleep on his/her side. We started by asking them to fix just the rangehood light so that we could at least see while cooking but they dismissed it and said they'd do it after we left.

They refused a late check out even though their cleaning staff were not to show up til hours later.

On a whole, it was a nice place, but the lack of hospitality left a bad taste upon leaving.

Management Response

We really never refuse this kind of request,we assist our guest in any kind of problem. This was probably a misunderstanding.
About late check out we had another reservation and always offer our guest to store the luggage in our store along the main street.

“Top of the town”
Reviewed 13 June 2015 for a stay in May 2015

I think I originally booked a different apartment (there are several under this company), but when I wrote to ask about "senior access" (my mom walks with a cane), I think they rebooked me here. No worries - we were very happy with the apartment. It's at the top of Manarola, so there is a steep climb from the train. However, the staff member who walked us up to the apartment offered to help with our bags. I think the only downer was the 3 flights of stairs to get to the bedroom floor (and 4 to the kitchen). However, the views from the kitchen terrace are FABULOUS.

The kitchen is fully equipped: full-size fridge, microwave, stove/oven, clothes washer. I don't think there was one cooking utensil we wanted to use that wasn't provided. Yes, you have to take out the trash, but it's around the other side of the church (about 25 yards).

The WiFi was not working for 2/3rds of the time we were there. But the staff checked on it twice a day. Look it as an opportunity to unplug and unwind - enjoy the simple life!

Finally, the kitchen terrace faces the church and bell tower. I'm sure there's a bell schedule but it's something only locals would know/understand. The bell ringing got to be comical. Our first night, the bells went crazy at 5:45. The next night it was 7:45. Our last night it was 5:45 again. We loved the bells and they do stop at night.

We loved our stay here but might try another apartment in this group, if we go to Manarola again.
