Owner description: The Teatro di San Carlo was designed by the architects Giovanni Antonio Medrano and Angelo Carasale for the monarch since Charles wanted a new and larger theatre for Naples to replace the old and dilapidated Teatro San Bartolomeo of 1621. On 12 February 1816 the San Carlo was destroyed by fire. The Theatre was re-designed by the architect Antonio Niccolini and rebuilt within ten months on order of King Ferdinand IV. In 1845 there was additional refurbishment and, by 1854, the theatre's interior appearance changed to the now-traditional red and gold. Now carefully restored to its former splendour, the San Carlo is the oldest working theatre in Europe.

The restoration has brought this historical landmark up to the present with all the trappings of it's glorious past.

Beautiful building, I can imagine a wonderful experience if I attended a performance. However, this was just a guided tour completely spoilt by the piano tuner plying his craft whilst we were there, trying but failing to hear the commentary. I thought he could have waited a few minutes until the tour leader had described the details and history. Even worse, it was a paid tour. Maybe readers might like to ask if there are any distractions, prior to buying their guided tour tickets. The tour leader carried on as if nothing was wrong.

We had an informative tour by a lovely guide giving us lots of history of the building and those who performed here. Definitely should be included to any visit to Naples.

Opera Sancarlo is a very beautiful building. On the performance there were mostly local people. There is dress-code here, no shorts! There are even black suits with bow ties.
The Opera house is one of the oldest in Europe. Everything is perfectly organized. Above the stage there are titles in Italian and English. The theater is on duty teams of doctors and firefighters. Very beautiful girls-Italian as a flight attendant, help you to find your seats. In the interval, you can drink coffee or champagne in the buffet, walk on the street-issue special coupons-passes. The performance is pleasant to watch and listen to,
