We spent 3 nights at the Hotel Amalfi and would have to rate it no more than a 3 Star experience.

Upon check-in, the reception staff were friendly but once they saw we had our baby with us, we were pulled inside the office were the Manager(middle aged woman) sat and advised that our reservation did not include a baby and that we need to pay extra for the baby to stay! They wanted to charge us 30Euros a night for the crib, when I mentioned that we co-sleep and wont be needing a crib we were told we had to pay an extra 10Euro a night for the child. When I mentioned that this is the first Hotel/Accommodation that we have ever stayed in that is requesting additional payment for a baby, the Receptionist sympathetically looked at us and only said "I'm sorry but this is the policy of the Hotel". At that point we had just flown into Naples, driven a 2 hour drive to Amalfi and just wanted to rest with a baby. We agreed and had to pay there and then for the child, the Amalfi Tax and the garage parking we requested. Not a great start!

We booked a standard room with a double bed and knew it was an older styled roomed (italian tiles, dated furniture....) - so we were not disappointed in our room. The room was spacious enough for 3 days, and the bathroom also offered a shower, bidet, toilet and a single basin. However the bed was uncomfortable - very hard and the pillows also leave much to be desired. The towels were also hard and when we rubbed ourselves, little pieces of fluff came off. The room was clean and during our stay we could not complain about housekeeping.

Fantastic Breakfast on the rooftop! The selection was varied and offered a delicious spread of European cold meats, cheeses and a lovely selection of freshly baked cakes from the Amalfi region. To my husbands disappointment no "English Breakfast" was served though. The terrace was lovely and one could enjoy the early summers mornings looking onto the churches dome and enjoy a good cup of coffee.

Excellent central location if that is what one is looking for. Easy access to the main street shops and restaurants. Just a short walk to the beach and public transport network (buses) However being so central, it can be very noisy. We had the privilege of staying during their Saint Andrews celebration, and although a delight to experience a local celebration, it was terrible if one needed a good nights rest and had a baby. There was music and shows blasted from the central square until past midnight and we could hear the diners from the main street. They also had fireworks which were very loud and went off like canon shots. Not every traveller will experience the noise level as we did, however one needs to note that noise from the main streets does travel to the rooms.

The hairdryer in the room is not meant for long hair! The hairdryer 'died' on me not even 2 minutes into me drying my hair. When we called the reception to ask for another hairdryer as the one in the room was not working, the Hotel Manager (middle aged woman) arrived at our room, came in without waiting for me to get dressed and inspected the dryer. Which started up again. She looked at me with an expression of "What are you going on about?!?!?! It is fine!". After trying to explain her that the dryer always switches off whilst blowing, I resorted to showing her what I meant. She continued to tell me that I should not overwork the hairdryer and that I should let it rest for 2 minutes and then blow my hair for 1 minute....

We also appreciated the parking available. Parking space is scarce on the Amalfi coast and people park in every nook they can find. This garage was a selling point for us and very convenient. However be aware that is comes with a 30Euro per day fee and one needs to tell the hotel staff 24 hours in advance when you wish to make us of your car, as they park the cars in this tiny garage based on departure times. Also be aware that if you drive to the hotel, you will be sharing the road with pedestrians.

So to summarize:
Good central location
Great Breakfast
Friendly and helpful staff - except for the Hotel Manager who seemed to have just been a crumpy foul mood all the time
Clean Rooms
Garage parking available
Uncomfortable beds
Be aware of additional charges such as paying extra for a baby

The staff here was wonderful -- pleasant and helpful. We stayed in a superior room, which had a hot tub and a queen sized bed, and small bathroom with shower. While a bit tight on space, the room was very clean and we enjoyed it. Breakfast on the roof was wonderful on a sunny morning. We also appreciated the parking available -- parking can be very difficult to come by on the Amalfi Coast, and this garage was a selling point for us and very convenient. Boutique style, we really liked this hotel for what it is.

Spent three nights in the Hotel Amalfi and we loved it. Price was very good and the location was excellent. In the heart of the city and about equidistant between the waterfront and the hiking trails in the opposite direction. Room was very clean and comfortable and we did not have any problem with the beds or shower. You just have to keep in mind that this is a typical European hotel and so the layout is just a little less spacious when compared to North American hotels. We thought the tiling throughout was great--very Italian! Staff was always very helpful and professional in every way. Breakfast on the terrace was a perfect way to get the day started. Very good selection of pastries, meats, fruit, etc. Excellent experience overall and one of the better three-star hotels we have stayed in anywhere. Would definitely go back.

So we were a bit disappointed because we had requested a modern room and we were not given one. The room we were given was very small and old. The bed was uncomfortable as were the pillows. The benefits of this place though is the location, it's perfect, and the terrace. They serve a great breakfast every morning on the terrace but also.you can go up there at any time. We loved having wine up there at night and admiring the views. So for the price it was ok but if you don't get a modern room expect a pretty crappy room.
