This would have been a solid three stars but for the staff's inability to deal with an issue we had.
First off the hotel is miles from anywhere...and I don't mean lovely rural location. It is set in a litter strewn tract of land surrounded by busy (but not noisy) roads. I would not recommend an evening stroll.

Breakfast was really poor for a four star hotel. They ran out of a lot of things which weren't replaced...fruit, eggs, tea etc.

The indoor pool and spa are really nice but mad inhospitable by the "We will charge you for a cap, a towel, flip flops etc" Not acceptable for a four star hotel

Our bed was broken. Reported this at 8.30am. Nothing done by 3.30. Reported again (at this point the receptionist was having a shouting match with another guest). Eventually a room move was begrudgingly agreed but this took an hour to resolve. They should just have moved us first thing in the morning.

Room tip: If the bed feels broken it probably is

We were pleasantly surprised with the high quality hotel as we entered the parking lot. Impressive lobby and overall appearance of the grounds and building. The indoor pool was resort-like in appearance. The room was large and roomy and even had a walk-in closet. Very unusual and unexpected for a 4-star European hotel.

This hotel is outside Matera, but if you have your own car, yiou can avoid the heart of this city by staying in the Hilton Garden. The hotel is modern and clean' the rooms are spacious and the mattress comfortable, but they use very strong materials for the carpet cleaning, which might be unpleasant .
The pool and SPA are wonderful. The restaurant (which you need to use, since there are no other restaurants in this area) has good dishes with fair (but not cheap) prices. The staff at the reception desk are very helpful and suggested to change the room when we asked.
I highly recommend this hotel for one night stoppover.

Lovely bedroom on 1st floor. Evening reception staff pleasant and helpful. Beautiful gardens to walk round or sit in. Outdoor pool closed when we stayed. My evening meal was ok but 2 ladies had undercooked fish however they didn't tell the staff. Overall we thought the hotel fine. Only downside it is a way out of town but we were on a coach so no problem for us.

The hotel is located some distance from Matera and mainly caters for tour groups that are visiting Matera. Our room was quite satisfactory, clean and comfortable if a little small. We didn't eat in the restaurant so I cannot comment, breakfast was more than ample with selection of cereals, cold meats, cheeses, pastries and scrambled eggs and bacon. Some of the staff were quite friendly and helpful, while others were cold and distant. WIFI worked throughout the hotel although slow and sometimes impossible to connect to. Not sure I would recommend this particular Hilton hotel.
