Hotel Nazionale is a recently refurbished hotel in Matera. It is located at walking distance (10 minutes) from the city centre and the Sassi area. Rooms are confortable are personnel is very dedicated to their work.

Pros: clean and cheap (for Matera) room, free parking in the basement; reasonable breakfast.
Cons: soulless ugly room; the tiniest shower ever; very basic toiletries
Location: in the middle of nowhere, far from the 'sassi', so don't consider this hotel unless you have a car.
A good choice if, like us, you discover that most other hotels in Matera are solidly booked.

Nice hotel with modern style. All is clean and new. Welcoming and friendly staff. Breakfast good but not varied enough. Good location. Not so far from the center. Matera Villa Longo station in 10 minutes walking.

Stayed for just one night. Easy to find with the help of the GPS. Quick check in and staff gave good information for our afternoon in Matera. Excellent parking under the hotel and free. Got the bus in to the old Sassi area and walked back. The room was very clean and had all the usual facilities for a modern hotel. Good breakfast. Would definitely recommend this hotel.

Yes, there are fancy, expensive, luxury hotels in the Sassi (Cave District) in ancient Matera but if you want a modern, very clean, well-equipped hotel within 20 min stroll of Old Town at 80 euros (double room and self-service breakfast) you can't go wrong with the Hotel Nazionale. Easy to find (pop the full address in your SatNav) with it's own underground parking, lifts to all floors, dining room, bar (the G&T's were triples for about £3!), helpful friendly staff - it's all here. Quiet rooms, very comfortable beds, big bathroom with powerful showers. Downside - smart & modern but not much character (who cares) and no views to speak of (who cares). The real gems of Matera, the Sasso (early Sasso Caveoso and the later Sasso Barisano) are what you've come here to see. To get to the sights - walk out of the hotel entrance, turn right to the Via Nazionale and then turn left and walk up the hill. Yes, it's a bit of a stroll and it'll take you about 20-25 mins up Via Nazionale/Via Annunziatella/Via XX Settembre to the Piazza Vittorio Veneto. If its a problem - take a bus. Bus stop on Via Nazionale. Bus timetable from reception. English spoken but not fluently. Not good enough? Well, how's your Italian. ;-) Taxi around 25 euros. Loads to see, too much to go into here. Take a good guide book. Dorling-Kindersley etc. Lovely restaurants include Baccus, Soul Kitchen and Lucrezia. All worth a try.
Lots of places worth visiting around Matera. Internet is full of worthwhile suggestions. We took a 40 minute drive to Greek ruins at Metaponto & museum in town centre ("two-horse town") which was very worthwhile. Enjoyed the coffee in cafe just outside museum (check opening times). After that we enjoyed an afternoon on the beach at Policoro and intended to visit Taranto but ran out of time. Met a local guy on beach who recommended a visit to Castelmezzano on return journey north to Rome via Potenza. Again, we never made it but wished we had. Apparently one of the "most beautiful villages in Italy you've never heard of". Oh well.
On way north, we stopped at the amazing Montecassino Abbey. It's been rebuilt after 2nd World War and well worth a detour/stop. It's worth stopping just to visit the Abbey Museum and see the treasures including Sandro Botticelli's The Nativity. Mind-blowing stuff!
