“Another crowded square”
Review of Plaza de Canalejas

Very busy square in Madrid. Looking around you can see several beautiful old buildings. Overall, it is very crowded so it is hard to enjoy the area.

Plaza de Canalejas is next to the busy main street and crowds are continually walking through and it doesn't feel like a square as such, more like part of the strret.

Some nice bars but always too many people about. Traffic gets smelly and trumpet amateurs worsen the noise.

I would come here to visit the beautiful La Violeta which is a 100 year old sweetshop specialising in violet flavour confectionery. It has a lovely original wooden shopfront and there are other picturesque premises like this here. The problem is the area is very busy with traffic and building works plus you can see prostitutes in the streets around here and the businesses are set up to cater for tourists mostly so are not great.

This is a small circular plaza along Carrera de San Jeronimo, a couple hundred meters east of Puerta Del Sol. Named after politician and orator, José Canalejas who was assassinated here in 1912.

This is a small public space surrounded by buildings, including the eclectic Casa de Allende and Meneses buildings which are appealing to the eye and quite interesting to see for those who enjoy architecture.

Plenty of restaurants, cafes and bars in the area for those who fancy a break from sightseeing. It is worth taking a look at the interesting buildings if you passing through Plaza de Canalejas during visits to Madrid.
