I used to put my family into this family-run hostal when they visited me in Madrid back in the '90s. I stayed recently for a weekend and was reminded why they liked it so much.
Hostal Riesco is located just off Puerta del Sol on the 3rd and 4th floors of an old building. Press the hostal bell at the ground floor main entrance and they'll buzz guests in. Take the elevator or stairs to head up to the hostal (note the stairs were being repaired during my visit - June 2018).
Friendly staff, a spotlessly clean room with double bed, and its own small but adequate bathroom with a good shower. Wall mounted TV that you can change language settings to V.O. and free wifi. Small balcony overlooking the street. I paid €45 per night - extremely good value. If you want breakfast, it's an extra €3.50.
The location is fantastic - very close to Plaza Mayor, the department stores on Calle Preciados, bars and restaurants at Plaza Santa Ana... Yes, there is some night-time noise from Puerta del Sol with people heading home from the bars (take ear plugs if you're a light sleeper) but this should no way put you off staying here.
