I struggled between whether to rate this hotel a 4 or a 5. On some levels, it is clearly a solid 5, while in others it does not rise to that level. First, as it relates to the property itself, this hotel is magnificent. I have rarely stayed in any hotel that is this beautiful--it is definitely special and unique, with stunning architecture and gorgeous details everywhere you look (a solid 5). The hotel is also well located near Sevilla's most beautiful attractions. The individuals at the concierge desk are extremely friendly and helpful. I would like to make special mention of Antonio Abades who was exceptionally helpful--a true gentleman who goes the extra mile to help out. He provided us recommendations to attractions, assistance with train tickets, and always followed up on everything.

Regarding the qualiy of services, the hotel could make some improvements. We were upgraded to a suite, which was spacious, but not very pretty and nothing special regarding furnishings. The walls were essentially bare except for a few crooked pictures. The bathroom was modern and spacious, but there were a few shortcomings. For instance, there was no soap dish in the shower (you could see the holes where it once hung but was never replaced). It sounds petty, but this is a 5 star and it made taking a shower more difficult than necessary. Also, the toiletries were not replenished properly (we got several tubes of hair conditioner but no shampoo). The housekeeper did a turn-down service in the evening, but didnt show up until 11PM, when we'd almost already gone to bed. Once she provided chocolates, but only one piece (for two people!). Of more concern was the coffee maker in the room. When we arrived, it had several pods and creamer, and cups. We used the coffee maker upon arrival, but during our over two day stay, the dirty cups remained on the server the entire time, and the pods were never replaced. The housekeeper consistently ignored them. This should not happen in a 5 star hotel. If you read other Alfonso reviews, you will notice several others that praise the property itself, but find shortcomings in the services, so our experience is not unique. We dined at the restaurant one evening, and the food was quite good, but during the meal a hotel housekeeper showed up with mops and buckets and started routine cleaning in the area around us (it was only around 10 PM). This somewhat ruined the ambiance of the evening. The hotel breakfast was plentiful and impressive, but not everything seemed as fresh as it should be.

Having said this, everyone who worked in the hotel was very friendly, polite, and seemed to want to do a good job and to be helpful. Perhaps they just need greater supervision or guidance (I note that the hotel manager responds to the reviews, but the manager should do something about them rather than just say he takes them seriously). Despite my criticisms, I would return again since the property is so extraordinary.

In summary, this is an exquisite property, truly special. On that level it's a clear 5. But as it relates to services, there's room for improvement.

From the moment I arrived I felt in good hands. My car was whisked off by one of the personnel, still with luggage on board, and when I got to my room the cases were already sitting there! Reception was efficient, multi-lingual, and available to help with any problems. The American Bar is an Art Deco classic, and even the bartenders are fluent in English. There is also a Tapas-Taverna bar where you can sip a drink and/or eat tapas inoors or out on the terrace. The rooms are comfortable to the point that one looked forward to going to bed at night! The position of the hotel is optimal, with the main tourist attractions within walking distance. And an endless choice of bars and tapas restaurants if you wish to go out. The hotel was a former summer palace of the King of Spain, and is opulence personified. Well worth pushing out the boat for a stay here.

First let me say that if you are driving into the hotel it can be a little confusing. The hotel is located along a pedestrian only area. When I was driving in I reach 100 feet from entrance but was afraid to enter because of the no go zone signs. There is a parking garage along side the hotel which is where I parked. I found out that you are allowed to enter past the signs if you are going to the hotel. So don’t let the signs stop you.
The hotel is magnificent , staff very helpful. You can walk to many of the historical sights, restaurants, shopping. As an SPG member we were upgraded

We ate in the restaurant, having returned from an afternoon at the Feria. What a mistake. We were actually staying at the beautiful casa del poeta, because there were only suites left at this hotel when we booked which were over $1K euro per night. It is a beautiful hotel but based on our shady experience in the restaurant I would not stay.
We ordered still bottled water with our meal and what they brought us was a bottle of water, where the bottle was clearly scratched, dirty and reused, and the water had most likely been filled from the tap. We questioned this from the waiter and then maitre de who reassured us that nothing was wrong with the bottle and the water, despite us never subsequently seeing anything like it during our 2 week stay in Madrid. Needless to say we did not drink the water and ended up leaving our meal pretty much untouched. We could not believe it when there was then a 7 euro charge for the dirty water. We paid, left and ate somewhere else, but we did want to make sure that visitors were aware of this. The service was also awful, slow and they clearly didn't want us in their restaurant, despite being very well dressed etc.

Spent two nights at Alfonso XIII with family during the "Semana Santa" of Easter 2018.
Prices had clearly skyrocketed, as every single hotel in Seville had 100% occupancy that week.
We stayed in an Executive Suite (our two teenage kids were arranged with two roll-away beds in the living room), but with no balcony.
The room was ok (lots of marble around), but somewhat dated, so probably, when considering the price (€ 1,700/night) not worth the cost.
Where I think that this hotel is unique (and that is why I attributed it 5 stars) is for the following considerations:
1) It is a piece of history, erected for the 1929 Expo Hibero-Americana, which has hosted royals and dignitaries since its opening - and it is, by the way, the only real top level accomodation in Seville still today.
2) All common parts are extraordinary: gym is brand new, outside pool is impeccable, breakfast room is a wood panelled grand hall with one of the most magnificent buffets I have ever seen, restaurant is housed in a marvellous cloister, fantastic bar in the patio where many scenes of Lawrence of Arabia were filmed (remember Lawrence entering the British Officers Club in Cairo?)...
3) Food is quite good and elaborate (by the standards of a hotel restaurant), served candlelight in an unforgettable setting.
4) Personnel is kind and prepared, you can clearly see that they hire senior people who know their job and that they are trained and supervised appropriately: a particular mention to our Concierge, who had a great "human touch" in arranging our two days in Seville.
5) Hotel location is just outstanding: close to the medieval old city centre (literally 2 minutes to the Alcazar), but secluded in the green spaces around the Parque Maria Luisa and fronting the lovely University of Seville, housed in a 16th century grand building: no cars around the hotel, just the trams and the fiacres carrying tourists on a ride of the Parque.

All in all, this is, again, a piece of history and a unique landmark, and if you go to Seville there is just no question that this is the top choice.
One recommendation would be to ask for a room with a balcony / terrace: given the clement weather of Andalucia, and the green and silent scenery around, this is something we definitely missed upon our stay and a must if you check in spring or summer.
