Owner description: An archive containing some of the most important historical records of Spanish colonialism in the Americas.
Reviewed 16 February 2018

This whole building is dedicated to commerce with the Americas since 1492. According to our tour guide, the papers laid side by side would extend to 9km! There was a fascinating exhibition about the Guadalquivir river at the time we were there, and some drawings by Murillo (?). Well worth it just for the exhibitions, but the archive is also impressive.

Wow! we loved this whole experience. It is so beautifully set out and all the displays are so informative and well put together. You have to go there to really understand that period in history. Even if you feel you know the history, there will be some eye-openers!

The Archivo General de Indias or in English General Archive of the Indies brings under a single roof, documents related to the Spanish Empire. The golden age of Spain when it controlled colonies in South America and Philippines.

I really feel immensely privilege to be in a building related to such an important period in history (the negative aspects of colonialism aside).

To begin the tour, there's a video describing the history of the building and the goal of the archives. It's in Spanish with English subtitles. As for the exhibits, there is some information in English, but sadly most is in Spanish only. Entry is free, so I can't complain too much. I'd have given it another star if there had been more English information.

Beautiful building which is free to visit, there is a good presentation of the history of the Archivos. The archives are now held elsewhere but there are some documents on display, sadly when we visited there was a themed presentation so these were mainly related to the Guadalquivir.

We had a very interesting walk through this originally customs and excise and contracts building. It is grand ,bright and pleasant inside and full of their explanations and displays of the Spanish conquests of South America which you can take or leave . There were no crowds or queues
