I didn’t even realize there was another church, the Liebfrauenkirche, right next to the Dom. Not until we walked into the door did we realize it is its own church. Why would there be two churches right next door to each other? I’m still not sure. It appears to be one and the same. In any case, there are two distinct churches and both are gorgeous but yet it is much smaller and less grandiose.

A magnificent Gothic church, rare in its symmetric construction, often missed in favour of the romanesque Cathedral next door

If the great Dom or Cathedral is Romanesque, its sister, next to it in the same overwhelming complex, is a fine example, especially inside, of Gothic architecture. I visited this church first, and probably should have left it until later, as I favored its soaring columns and arches over the heaviness of the Dom next door. Either way, both are must-sees in Trier, they are free and not crowded. Enjoy!

...however: worth to take a look into. Big, inviting, different. It is slightly literal then the dome (which in a perfect row you will visit after the Liebfrauen-Church). Hard to describe.

next door to the Dom (and rather over-shadowed by the cathedral's truly remarkable Romanesque exterior decoration), but if you do come into the Dom's small neighbour (it's free to do so) you'll find that inside it's basically circular with soaring beautifully coloured stained glass
