We spent one night at Art Hotel Tucholsky while touring art shows and festivals in Germany. We stopped in Bochum for the Ruhr Triennale. The check-in was unprofessional, unfriendly and performed by one of the restaurant staff member it seems. Then a waitress was asked to show us the way to access our bedroom but she was busy serving clients in the restaurant. The rooms are extremely disappointing (we booked a Superior Double at $67/night) and photos on hotel website totally inaccurate. Our room doesn't have any charm or style, it looked like more a hospital room with some bad art on the wall. In addition our room was located on the pedestrian street side, with bars and loud music until late night. When we came back from the performance at midnight, the street was full of people drinking and speaking loud with blasting music. Compare to other hotels we stayed in during our 2 weeks trip in Germany, this one is to avoid. For similar rate, you would find much better offer.

The check-in is carried out in the charming, cosy restaurant area, the setting handy for the ccity centre, not least Bochum's marvellous new concert-hall. But access to the rooms is via a dingy storage-area, each door needing painfully to be unlocked with an old-fashioned key, and then you find there is no lift.
Our room was up four flights totally 72 steep stairs. When we reached it we found it delightfully clean, comfortably furnished, but, as usual in Germany, no hospiatlity tray.
The biggest shock was the bathrroom: again spotless, but no shower-curtain, no toiletries except for one tiny bar of soap, and, worst of all, clear glass walls which needed to be screened modestly with two curtains (unless you were of kinky disposition.
This double-room might be an embarrassment for certain couples sharing it.
The bed was dangerous, with a flat wooden surround jutting out considerably all round beneath the excellent mattress (undivided, for a merciful change). I could hear the occupant of the next room clattering over his wooden floor when he turned in at 3.30a.m.
Not a relaxing experience. The stairs nearly killed us, and the bathroom really is weird -- and disasteful.

Room tip: Accessibility is dreadful for some of us.

Dear Guest,

I thank you for your honest words about your stay with us and I am also very unhappy to hear that we failed to manage your expectations.
Our design is certainly special and reflects the urban culture of Bochum.
But our aim is that guests can feel home as well.

Your feedback is very important to us to improve our service at all time, thank you very much for your review.

Kind regards

Stephanie Bartocha

I stay in the Tucholsky every time I visit Bochum for work. Always immaculately clean, always comfortable and the staff are always super-efficient and friendly.

Go for the rooms over the big restaurant to the rear of the hotel, as there is no elevator serving the rooms at the front and the rooms there are smaller and more basic.

As always, you get what you pay for, so check the room rate and facilities carefully before booking - it's worth spending the extra €15 to get a bit more room and comfort.

I have always had excellent sleep in this hotel, despite it being in the middle of a busy area for restaurants and bars. The beds are very comfortable and you can specify what kind of pillows you want when you are booking.

I have had the tapas meal in the restaurant downstairs a number of times and it is great value and highly tasty. The breakfast in the mornings is the usual German offering - table service with a limited, but very tasty menu to set you up for the day.

Solid, dependable, highly recommended.

Stayed twice on business and a great location for the bars and restaurants with direct access to The Bermuda3eck (Bermude-Triangle), the trendy district with about 75 Bars, Restaurants, Cafes and Bistros.
My first stay was a basic small room at the front (roadside). No lift and on the 3rd floor. Very basic room but everything you need (good shower) and not too noisy.
Second stay was a superior room at the rear of the hotel and a lift overlooking the pedestrianised bars on the triangle. Room was unbearably hot with no air con or fan and had to open windows to let some air into the room. The noise of the bars goes on into the early hours. If you are a light sleeper this hotel is not for you. If you like easy access to the lively bars etc. Perfect location. Breakfast was freshly prepared and delicious every day. Restaurant and tapas bar I did not try but menu and food looked delicious.
Good value rooms and friendly staff- but be warned about the noisy surroundings.

Tiny hotel with tiny rooms, the reception is part of the restaurant bar, you need watch out for it! Good location, in the middle of the Bermuda Triangle area, all restaurants and entertainment are close by. Could be a little bit noisy time by time. No elevator to the 4th floor, had some difficulty to get an iron to do my shirt and there was no table to do it. Nice and clean bathroom but the floor carpet was awfully dirty.
