Grand old hotel in a picturesque location

4.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed 28 Jun 2018via mobile
The room was clean, but slightly worn; the view out over the lake made up for that—despite the presence of a busy (and noisy) street in between. Parking is only available for a charge, and it’s not at all easy to find—if you’re driving, you might prefer a more accessible location. The staff was friendly and helpful. Breakfast is available for a charge. No A/C.

This is a very rustic and historic hotel on the Alster not too far from the Kennedy bridge and with the bar and restaurant section of St. Georg just behind it. It is about 15 minutes walk from the central train station, but there is no public transport (at least none I could see) very near it.

My room seemed ancient. I have no idea when the building was constructed (1800‘s?) but the floor seemed original. It creaked with every step and I felt very sorry for the people below me, especially after getting in quite late one night.

The room looked over the Alster (well mostly over trees in front of the Alster) and the windows were really well soundproofed - the street between the hotel and the Alster is very busy, but it wasn‘t a problem. What was a problem was the lack of A/C, so unless the room service shut the drapes against the afternoon sun (they didn‘t!) it was baking. The windows had insect screening, so getting fresh air in wasn’t a problem - just not over night.

Breakfast was quite good but extremely full on both days - on the first day my colleague and I actually had to request for a second dining room to be opened, as the regular one was overfilled with guests.

All in all, I felt the price of the room was too high for what you get (around 160€ per night).

Room tip: Rooms to back likely less noisy, but windows keep street noise low.

Dear Guest, many thanks for your feedback.
We are pleased that you enjoyed your stay with us.
First there is a bus stop on the backside of the hotel, 2 minutes walking distance.
Bus Nr. 6 runs frequently to the central train station within 2 stops.
The building was constructed in 1880 and it is a hotel since 1950.
The original wooden floor is a component of the historic building and its creeking belongs to the special atmosphere in this old house.
Unfortunately none of our rooms provides air condition. Maybe you try a room to our quite backyard next time, so that you can sleep while the window is open.
We are looking forward seeing you again.
Best regards, Franziska Noeckel / Review Manager

Highly recommended hotel. Location is fantastic, our room was over looking the beautiful lake Alster. A few steps from the city centre. The room was very spacious for a triple room with a double sofa bed, and clean. We enjoyed a lovely enormous window which gave a lot of light. Hotel management and staff were very professionally nice and helpful. They saw to all our requests without hesitation. They also surprised me with a lovely birthday cake for my birthday. Will definitely stay there when visiting Hamburg. For the sailors they ll definitely enjoy the sailing going on the lake from the comfort of the room. Well done.

Checked in to this hotel on a Friday afternoon for an extended week-end stay in Hamburg. Got a nice single room on the ground floor. The room was small, but had everything I needed, even a minibar. The bathroom was fitted with a shower.
The hotel is located in the St Georg area, an area with a lot of nice restaurants. It is also located near the lake Alster, a nice area for walks. We visited Hamburg in Mars. I can imagine the area being even nicer when spring comes.
Breakfast buffet was not included in our room prices, but could be bought for €15. The breakfast was nice and had everything you would expect.
The hotel staff was friendly and service minded, ant the cleaning of our rooms was efficient and thorough.
All in all this hotel represents great value for money. The location is great too. In short: Highly recommended!

What I liked most about this hotel funny as may be is the area it was in, just right next to the Outer Alster Lake, it provided a gorgeous view and a nice walkway, relaxing and pretty. The decoration and style of the hotel has a lot of character, and its close to the bus and walking distance from restaurants and more. Excellent service from all the staff, and the restaurant was really good as well, but genuinely the views were amazing.

We booked in here with the family. We got a family room with two single beds and a sofa bed in the new part of the hotel and a double room in the old part. Check in was fine and no issues the staff were nice and efficient and within 5 minuted we were in our rooms. Spacious with nice modern fittings. There was a minibar in the rooms and a well stocked fridge(although it wasnt that efficient temperature wise). Anyway all good and the views from the facade were amazing with large windows that could be fully opened, which were great at keeping out the noise of the main street outside. The annex was a bit noisier and not as well sound proofed. We never dined in the hotel, so cant comment on the quality of the food, but the bar was pleasant enough and the staff were chatty and nice.
The only problem that we encountered was that despite us leaving the do not disturb handle on the door we were disturbed on four separate mornings by the staff cleaning. This was disappointing especially as my sister was on her own in the room when the male cleaner entered.
The location was brilliant and handy for the bus to and from the city centre. It is literally 50 meters from the lake and has some spectacular views.

Room tip: Ask for a high room with a lake view. Avoid the family room on the ground floor, people walk past and look in all day.

Dear Dylan, many thanks for your feedback. We are pleased that you and your family enjoyed your stay with us. Please excuse the trouble with our housekeeping though using the 'do not disturb signs'. This does not meet our standards and we will have internal discussions. Looking forward seeing you again. Best regards, Franziska Noeckel / Review Manager
