Tucked away in this charming village of a thousand violins is this beautiful museum highlighting the rich history of their string instruments heritage.

Please be advised that this museum only accepts cash.

There are two reasons why I didn't give this place 5 stars: the likely fascinating practical demonstration of violin making was done in German only and they don't accept credit card for the entrance fee.

With those two minor complaints over, I should say it is an excellent museum, especially for someone who enjoys classical music and even more if they have played the violin. The museum is structured well, with the lower floor showing the process of making one in detail along with the history of the town. The upper floor shows a variety of beautifully made violin (and the spectacular viola d'amore).

Who would've guessed that the little town of Mittenwald was a center of violin making for centuries? This little museum chronicles the development of Mittenwald as an instrument-making town. It also provides interesting information about the process of string-instrument making. Highly recommended!

We visited in the afternoon and it was not very busy. The museum explains how violins are made and the history of violin making in Mittenwald. most of the displays are in German and English so we were able to follow them. There are videos explaining the modern process and also one from many years ago which showed young boys learning the skill of violin making. We enjoyed our visit and would recommend it, particularly if you are interested in music.

One of the most interesting places in Mittenwald. The art of violin makers[Luthiers] has a solid, ancient tradition in this city. This noble art,are equivalent with the Italian violin creators, with the well known maestros such as Stradivarius,Guarnieri,Amati .
Visiting museum, you can remark the art of making violins, from the beginning till the final phases of construction of such a delicates instruments .
