First time experience in Marseille and our residence for our stay was the Novotel Marseille Vieux Port and it turned out to be an excellent choice for us.
Marseille is steeped in history and tradition with all the attractions of modern life available but not overpowering the sense of time and history that speaks to you from its streets and landscape.
The Novotel is situated nicely to allow some great views of the Port with its thousands of high end seacraft, yachts and boats of every possible description and at night the lights of Port are stunning.
The Novotel shares a Spa and Beauty Centre with the adjoined Sofitel and often we would take the lift up to the rooftop restaurant and sips cocktails blinded by the sparkling nightlife on view.
The reception staff at the Novotel are confident and anxious to be of assistance from the minute you arrive, my every question was answered, every request found an agreeable solution from finding out where I might hear some blues music at night to all the comforts that make a traveller feel wanted.
Modern decor bright and clean plenty of seating and comfortable eat and drink options available with a pool area with all its attendant requirements.
Rooms were kept clean and staff were polite and not intrusive and the breakfast was a good start to the day with guides available as to the busy times which proved to be uncannily accurate.
I was very happy with my experience and our Novotel stay nicely complemented our adventures around Marseille.
It was perfect weather for an Irish family in search of some fun and culture in the sun but we quickly mastered the use of the local bus system No's 82 and 83 to conserve our energies a little bit as you don't realise how much walking can be clocked up on the legs when your rambling alluring streets in search of excitement and surprises.
When you're on holiday the world is all about strangers passing during the day and into the night and I found the Novotel and its staff provided us with a home away from home comfort zone that gave us confidence exploring the rest of Marseille.
Almost next door is a wonderful park and walks with amazing views of the sea traffic moving around the Port which looks all the more captivating and exhilarating in 30 degrees of South of France sunshine.
Our Novotel and Marseille experience reminds me of why we travel hundreds of miles to get away from everyone at home and then send them postcards that say, "Wish you were here"?

Since the main restaurant at our hotel was closed for renovations, we decided to check out the next door Novotel's restaurant.

Their menu was very enticing and we decided to have an evening celebration. They offered suggestions about items from the “Terre et Mer” (land and sea) section. Since I prefer meats, I ordered the 300 gr. extra large entrecôte. They didn't ask how I would like it done, but it came on the rare side as I would have preferred. It was priced moderately at about $23 and included a large order of french fries and a mixed salad. My guest ordered prawns in green curry with white and wild rice. My steak had a Roquefort sauce and a lemon butter sauce came with the prawns. We decided to share a dessert that was similar to peach melba and came with almonds.

We let them choose a white wine for us which turned out to be a pleasant light chardonnay.

We toured the premises after dinner and were impressed with the well lit, contemporary decor of the lobby and with the other facilities.

Stayed here with my husband and younger son. We arrived before the check-in time as we had a very early flight. The receptionist was very helpful and was able to give us an early check-in. The rooms are standard Novotel kit - does exactly as it says on the tin. The hotel restaurant is situated overlooking the old port with beautiful views. As it was Bastille Day we opted to eat in the hotel. The menu selection and the quality of food for the price is not great. Maybe it was just the day that was in it. Saying that the staff were very friendly and helpful. Breakfast is served in the restaurant and is a beautifully way to start your day. Here I had the best hotel scrambled eggs I have ever tasted and my husband agreed, well done! There is a nice pool and poolside bar. This is shared with the adjoining Sofitel Hotel. It get busy very quickly and stays like that for the day. The hotel is ideally situated for exploring Marseille. The old port is only minutes away. There is also a bus stop outside the hotel "Fort St. Nicholas" where you can catch the No.82s that will take you to St. Charles bus/train station for easy access to the airport - much cheaper than a taxi. Also the No.83 takes you on a lovely scenic tour of the coast if you wish to visit Marseille's Velodrome Stadium, which my son really enjoyed. I would thoroughly recommend this hotel for a stay in Marseille. My only gripe is that the bar is very expensive, 12 euro for a glass of wine!! I would recommend going up the road to the local cafes, much cheaper.
