This was our second visit, this time in apartment Palmier 4, excellent location with sea view from the good sized balcony. The balcony was very well equipped, with table and chairs for 2 plus 2 sun loungers, clothes airer, and very necessary Parasol. The rest of the apartment was the same as that of our previous trip, basic accommodation, two cooking rings plus microwave/grill combination, dishwasher and coffee machine. As standard at this type of accommodation in France, a linen and towels packet provided, so you have to make your own bed, and just basic starter pack of 1 toilet roll, and small amounts of cleaning products.

Once again we enjoyed the stroll through the grounds to the beach several times a day, early morning when it is really quiet, so a good long walk, busy during the day, then quiet in the evenings with just a few people around enjoying the warm evenings.

On our last day we dined at their beach cafe, excellent salads, good service, reasonable prices. The location could not be better, we flew down this time for a 3 night break, it is just 10 minutes drive from Aeroport Toulon-Hyeres, less to the La Capte local shopping area, or up the hill to the village of Giens. As I said in my last review, some may find the accommodation a little too basic, we don't care as the balcony plus the grounds plus the beach make it a real paradise for us. We will be back again.

Le Domaine de la Mer is perfectly located on the Eastern side of the Giens Peninsula at the end of the La Badine Beach (so not as crowded on that part), close to the Village and La Tour Fondue where you can embark to Porquerolles. We stayed at the small hotel not in the rentals available on this gated site, and that was comfortable enough (yet small room). Convenient Lunch/Snack Bar near the lounge chairs and an excellent restaurant for dinner with a friendly welcoming staff and a view over the bay. Enjoyed having free access to lounge chairs, outdoor ping pong tables, a superb pool, and paddle boats / kayaks rentals at the base of the site. More casual than luxurious, but this is how we like it.

We had visited Giens 3 times before, always staying in Le Provencal in the village and we used to walk down to the beach past Domaine de la Mer and one time we called in to get more information and the friendly staff invited us to look around. We decided then that we would stay here next time, and so we did. We stayed in Palmier 5 chosen for having a large terrace and sea view. We have stayed in French holiday accommodation before so knew exactly what to expect. The open plan living/kitchen had dishwasher, fridge, two halogen rings, combi microwave, coffee maker and enough pans, crockery, cutlery etc. Basic living room furniture but we were out on the terrace the whole time, with table and 4 chairs, and 2 deck chairs. The bedroom was compact with a standard French double bed, 1m90 long and 1m40 wide. The bathroom was down some steps, everything worked, but all rather shabby and very damp. We had pre-booked towels and bed linnen which were there ready for us to make up the bed. Again this is the norm in French holiday accommodation, as is the absence of any soaps, cleaning materials etc., there was one starter toilet roll provided!

We didn't use any of the other facilities, the location is simply superb, to walk down through the grounds on to the beach then north along the beach or south along the coastal path a couple of times a day is just wonderful. As relatively fit over-fifties we were able to walk up to the village one evening for dinner and back down again afterwards (take a torch with you).

We will return here. Yes a bigger bed would have been nice, and better quality accommodation, but this is absolutely the normal standard for such places in France, and the setting and location more than make up for the negative aspects.

Everything about our recent stay at the "domaine" was extraordinary. Our room at the hotel was comfortable (good beds!), the breakfast copious, and the beach, perfect... an idyllic spot on the Giens penisula. Although we were tourists from a distant place (the US), we received a wonderful welcome from the reception and were treated like members of the family by the charming hosts/owners of the lively beach restaurant: Franck, his wife, his sister and parents. Our boat trip to the îles d'Hyères was one of the highlights of our trip to the Var (Merci Marcel et James!) . We would love to return to the "domaine de la mer". It was pure paradise!

You may say this is typically french – you may be right as it shows how little can be sufficient to run a place like this successfully in this country. Rooms are made to look like something up-market, when you touch on any of the surfaces they will dissolve since it is all made of lowest price materials. In my bathroom for instance three lightbulbs out of four were defect, staff only managed to repair this one. Again you may say it is french character to know how to improvise – but then I am not charged full price normally? When you want to use the pool the caretaker will rudely shout at you it is closed since they are working on it, although it should be on duty as you have also paid for it.
All in all, while the location as such is great, this is not a happy place, and it is clearly overpriced for its unloving way of being managed.
