Great location, close to restaurants and areas to visit and tour. easy walk from train station.
But the entrance is not on street level. The desk is one floor off the street level and there is only a winding marble staircase up. Looks quaint but a real pain to climb with a suitcase if you are no longer young. If you go up to the desk the very nice young people there will help you get the bag up to the desk level, of course that means leaving it on its open by the door to the street while you go up and see if they are not busy. If your room is at the level above the desk, you are on your own getting the luggage up and back down to the desk level. The young people are very helpful and friendly but at times quite busy.
The air system was set on a predetermined temp which I think is Permanently Warm, not great on a muggy rainy day. Bathroom small and the toilet seating awkward. For some reason the room was set up for a single occupant, one tiny piece of soap, one set of towels. Apparently it was not only us because the second day there was a woman complaining that she was having to share the sliver of soap with another woman in her group.
Can't remember if there was wi-fi or if it worked, but places to plug in to recharge were limited (as one would expect in an old building). We did not have breakfast there as there are good cafes within a couple of blocks, like Cafe Rotounde that makes great cappuccinos and latte machiatos.
If (and that is a big IF) we stayed again we would not come with luggage and not in warm weather, but it is a great location.

Room Tip: there is no elevator so stay as close to desk as possible

Hello Andrew,

First of all, we would like to thank you for taking the time in writing a commentary on Booking.com.
We are sorry to hear that you had such problems during your stay in our hotel; concerning the stairs/luggage, we actually have an elevator which goes up to the first floor. Our staff should have told you and shown you its location, please accept our apologies for this mistake!
As for the room set up, please don't hesitate to see with our staff if you are missing something, and we will gladly give you what you need.
If you ever do decide to come back, please let us know of your remarks, we will take it into account to make your stay better than before.

best regards,

Julien

-All rooms were smelling either cigarette or cigar. The windows are basically decorative since no fresh air can come into the room.
-The bathroom was very small and the actual toilet was ridiculous, you could not sit on it properly.
-After 22:00 they are locking the main entrance without any warning and there wasn't anyone at the reception. I was ringing , knocking and calling for 20 minutes until someone opened the door for me.
-The breakfast was nice but one person could not clean the tables fast enough so we would have to sit with dirty tables or no cutlery or glass for water for a while or go ask for them ourselves.

The Hotel Artea suited us beautifully on our first visit to Aix. The breakfast was plentiful and varied and we had a quiet and well appointed room. The bathroom and toilet were well appointed and the staff knowledgeable and efficient.

Plaster falling off the walls, filthy carpets, tiles missing, mould on the bathroom tiles, bathplug not working, dirty curtains, bad decoration - not what we expected. Staff kept customers waiting for long periods as no-one on reception. Remote for TV was a health hazard. I have a number of photographs taken during my visit.

Sorry to see negative review, as we're so glad we chose this budget 3 star hotel. Admittedly, my husband and I chose to have the family room all to ourselves and placed our 17 year old daughter in double room opposite, lol. We had lazy breakfasts all together in our room, due to fridge, or out at nearby cafes, but there's also a small cosy room with balcony next to reception for morning coffee, evening drink, and a breakfast room which we never visited. The bathrooms were lovely, and, most importantly, the rooms were meticulously cleaned. We found the Receptionists absolutely delightful, and more than happy to help daughter in practicing her French before upcoming exam. The location was so close by that, despite my Chronic Fatigue illness, we managed to spend a wonderful week visiting everywhere in Aix, with two little day trips out. One receptionist helped us book a local taxi to a vineyard we liked the sound of (Chateau Dorgonne!).
So, while this review is now a few months after our visit, it's only due to my procrastination with To Do list!

Room Tip: We appreciated the family room, pretty fireplace for a practical, budget/midrange hotel.
