I had booked by phone (in my not very good French, but confirmed in English) for a Saturday night, for 3 of us including an elderly relative who can’t walk well. When we walked in at the beginning of evening service, we were told by the patron that we couldn’t have our booked table, as it was up two flights of stairs which my relative wouldn’t be able to manage. He announced this with saying ‘You have a problem’ and complaining that I hadn’t mentioned this when making the booking - not something I usually feel the need to mention, as I assume the restaurant will say if the table offered is inaccessible. This basically set the tone for and ruined the evening, which was a shame as the food was very nicely done - very fresh oysters and lobster remoulade for starters, turbot and monkfish for mains.
We did, you see, stay to eat - we were told that we could have a downstairs table until 9.00 (we started at 7.30). Stuck for choices on a Saturday night, we decided to stay. Unbeknownst to us, the patron - who seemed to know all the other diners personally - had phoned the other booking to ask them to come in later. Having been rushed through the main part of service, we were then left waiting 20 minutes to pay the bill - forgotten once we were no longer an urgent priority.
If you know the patron, go and have a lovely time. If not, prepare to be insulted.
