Close to 19th Arrondissement. Montmartre is around with Sacred Heart Church. This area is always packed. Lots of restaurants and bars can be found around
This arrondissement is simply amazing because it has so much to see and enjoy. Many good quality and low priced restaurants, bars and clubs here have a local feel so the welcome is genuine and warm. Cafes serve pastries, light lunches and coffee with a smile and the bakeries will offer you so many goodies you'll leave with more treats than you planned.
Most famous Moulin Rouge (see pic) is here along with the local train stopping in front which takes you to many tourist sites, if you want to avoid the uphill walk as this area is quite hilly and can get steep. Basilica du Sacre-Coeur de Montmartre provides views over Paris (see pics) and along the way you'll find gorgeous village fountains (see pic) dotted around the place, as well as attractive small streets (see pic) and childrens carousel (see pic) surrounded by shops, beauty salons and bars in village-type sectors.
It is within the district of Montmarte which is hilly dominated by the Basilica Sacré Cœur , and to the far west side of the district, the well-known Moulin Rouge cabaret and some museums.
I think this is the only district in Paris that is in higher elevation than the other administrative districts. Within the area are places where artists and musicians traded their talents and expertise and some other merchandising citizens that migrated to this country. It is the lively district that tourists prefer to roam around and enjoy the authentic unpretentious existence.
I lived in the 18th for two years and maybe in biased, but if you are a tourist it's a perfect place to start. Take the metro to chateau rouge station and walk up Rue Custine to Montmartre, it's one of the most beautiful walks in Paris. Super and reasonable priced restaurants, very French cafes where you can spend an hour or two solving the problems of the world, in Montmartre you have street artists, churches, a magical place .. enjoy the 18th !!
Dominate this Arrondissement along with great skyline views and views over Paris.
Despite the tacky souvenirs and street hawkers it remains one of the nicest areas of Paris to wander around.
1868.
I used to live here and loved my time in this northern district full of little villages. The big attraction is Montmartre with its charming hilly streets, views & great architecture. But there is so much more including some diverse immigrant quarters.
