We read about the stones before visiting so opted not to take the train or tour. The UK would still charge for this

Very impressive site, completely different to Stonehenge. Really enjoyed walking the circuit

……and the car park is free - managed to drive straight into a space as someone was leaving!

We spent half a day exploring the various neolithic sites around Carnac. It was quite busy and hot on the day we arrived and there was a bit of a tussle finding a park (free though.) The visitors centre is definitely worth a visit. We found the staff helpful and courteous and explained quite clearly when and how to book and English language tour. The film is definitely worth seeing but unless you speak French make sure you grab one of the headphone at the side and fiddle with the settings until you find the English dubbing, which made it an excellent experience.

The English language tour was definitely worth doing, despite the almost Australian heat and being able to walk in among the alignments was atmospheric to say the least. We also caught the hop on hop off train which allowed us to get a better feel for the extent of the area and had its own informative English headsets to listen too. We found them also to be helpful and polite.

Finally it was also worth taking our hire car out to track down a few of the lesser visited ruins, which were much less busy and more in their natural state.

The whole experience was a remarkable contrast to the masses of tourist and tight control we'd only just experienced at Stonehenge (which is actually not quite as old as these monuments.)

Looking at stones which are 6000 years old does leave you with an impression of wonder. The small site of just a couple of miles resides a hefty 1500 stones ranging from one foot to almost 18 feet!

Made me curious to find out more about prehistoric civilisations.

Tip: take the tourist bus or train first before you visit the site directly. The audio guide give more info then the brochures do. Totally worth it.

We took the touristic train that drives you along the megaliths, Carnac center and Trinite-sur-mer. On those three spots you can get of the train (hop on, hop off). Price is not too expensive (we paid 30 euro for 2 adults, 3 kid), but you could easily visit those three spots with your own car.
