It's an Ibis budget!

4.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed 4 weeks agovia mobile
We arrived at 1am without a booking!
When we eventually found the man at the front desk he was quick and helpful to get us two rooms.
It's cheap for central Bordeaux however the rooms were small, clean, and functional. I wouldn't want to stay here long but it did the job.

It’s called Budget for a reason. Visited for the Rugby World Cup. Shared a twin room with another fan who thankfully was a mate, or it could have been a bit awkward squeezing round the bedroom furniture and sharing the facilities. Good point - fresh towels every day. Bad point - they were only slightly bigger than tea towels. Clean but not very comfortable bed with highly mobile mattress topper and the worst pillow in the world. Weak and cramped shower with a wall mounting which fell off. Air con? Not working initially and not exactly arctic after we complained. Repaired promptly however. Everything cheap when it was new and it isn’t new any more.
Breakfast also basic and self service / self clearing. Same every day. Staff tried hard, though.
Summary - served a purpose but wouldn’t use it again despite it’s convenient location. OK for a couple of days but you’ll need to set a low bar to avoid being disappointed.

Where do we start with Ibis Budget Bordeaux Gare Saint-Jean hotel?

Firstly, we walked into the room and the temperature of the room was over 40 degrees. It was disgusting and inhumane. It was impossible to even unpack due how hot it was.

We then went down to tell the front desk, to which he replied “oh, yes we do have a problem with our air conditioning”. He then offered us a fan.

We then tried to use the fan - which made no difference - it simply blew around hot air. So we were then moved to another floor. However, this was just as bad! It was unbearable. We were feeling so unwell due to the lack of sleep.

We also had a problem with the lock on our door. The door would not lock when closed - so we had to risk our valuables being stolen. This was unacceptable.

We would not stay here again.

We booked two nights, from 17 to 19 of June, in Bordeaux and when we arrived there was no one at the front desk to check us in. We had to wait for while, we also had to work, so it was a big issue for us to have to wait that long. Finally, after we checked in, we found out the air conditioner was broken for the entire building, except for the reception for some reason. When we went down to inquire, the receptionist said it was going to be fixed but that she couldn't make any promises - it's literally 40 degrees Celsius in Bordeaux.

So we can't work and cant sleep in this conditions, and had to find another place last minute, which cost us a lot more than what he had planned for our stay.

When we came back to talk to the manager next Monday (when he supposed to be working), he wasn't there. And we found out that our reservation was not cancelled. And employee told us that this is very strange and if the other person would cancel it we would get our money back. And we were advised to send email, which we did, numerous times, we called but it has been already almost 4 month and no one replied.
Never seen such ridiculous service in my life, we still didn't get refund and still could not contact a manager. What kind of hotel it is that stuff blames everything on a manager that is never there?

Room tip: Don't stay in this hotel, you will be disappointed.

Value for money place to stay especially if you are using Bordeaux as a stepping off point to go further south as just by the main station.
Room compact and functional but very clean.
Shower good and instant hot water.
Bed a bit hard for my liking but my wife slept like a log and loved it. Only issue when we were there was only 1 lift working and if on a higher floor there was quite a wait to get up and down .
Would recommend

Room tip: Check in after 12.30 although with 24hr front desk you can when you want to. Use public transport in and around the city.very easy and very cheap

Stayed in hotel 15th July. Family of 5. Had requested adjoining rooms if possible. Arrived after 9. Girl at desk was extremely busy with queue out door. This didn't stop 1 or 2 guests cutting in to avail of fans. Rooms not together which meant husband had to stay in one room with one child and me with 2 others. We were on 4th floor, in a small pokey room, in a heat wave without air conditioning (which was advertised). I asked night reception for fan which had been given out to other guests at time of check in, no longer available. He advised he could open window....which opened the whole window outward....I advised I didn't feel safe doing that with 2 children on 4th floor that and mosquito bite and noise from outside from party goers as is in middle of town. Couldnt sleep a wink. His advice was to request reimbursement which I did. Took hotel few days answer and gave alternate email which isn't sending.

Overall very poor experience. Budget hotel....exactly what it says on the tin....have no expectations
