An excellent hotel in a strategic location at the train station

5.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed 16 Aug 2024via mobile
The Mercure Bordeaux Centre Gare Atlantic is an ideal location to stay at if you have a lot of luggage and / or want to stay close to the Gare St Jean station for convenience. It is right across the station within a 2 minute walk and offers express check in and check out services. Rooms are well appointed and spacious, and apart from good air conditioning (which is a must in summer here in Bordeaux with temp reaching over 40 Deg C!), the hotel also has an elevator which is a welcome feature for those traveling with luggage.

In addition, the staff are very friendly and helpful and went out of their way to ensure that we had a great stay (special shout out to Vicky for all her help - you are truly an asset to the hotel) and will even help you make reservations and guide you with detailed instructions and maps. All in all, a great place to stay right at the station and well connected with both bus and tram to the rest of the city.

The hotel staff (short and curly haired lady) in the reception wasn’t helpful and always gave us a blank stare when we were talking to her. She didn’t seem to understand English and made no attempts to provide any further help when asked. Firstly, when we told her that the phone in our room is not working, she just gave us a blank stare and said all phones are not working, is ok. She kept giving us a blank stare, so we gave up and had to live with needing to come down for every single thing we need because the phone wasn’t working. Secondly, for breakfast, they make you fry your own eggs, which is ok. But they serve breakfast until 11am during the weekends, and when we came down at 10.15am and there was barely anything left. There was only 1 egg left, and when we asked for more, she said that there’s no more and walked away. How could there be no raw eggs?! That’s the most basic thing. They need eggs for every dish and it’s highly impossible to not have any raw eggs left! The eggs are the only thing we can eat for breakfast as the rest are just bread. She insisted we eat the pre-mixed scrambled eggs instead, which of course we had no choice but didn’t really like. Next, when we asked her for help to get a taxi, we told her this one hour in advance. But when the time came for us to leave, she dismissively said to wait for 1-2mins. We waited for 5 mins, and when we asked her again, she said just wait for 10 mins and the cab is coming. We waited for 15 mins and still no cab! All she said to us was that they’re having a circulation problem. And all the time she was speaking to us in French, when she already knew we couldn’t speak French! I tried to use google translate but whatever she was saying, even after translation, still doesn’t make sense (logically). In the end, we just booked an Uber ourselves and we got the car in 2 minutes!! She could have just informed us to get a Uber instead of just muttering things in French which we didn’t understand. Really ruined our 3 days there and our impression of Bordeaux! Thankfully we moved to a different hotel and the difference in service level was stark! Our new hotel and experience with their staff made whatever time we had left in Bordeaux more enjoyable.

Never stay in this hotel if you don’t speak French. And if you want to have a good time in Bordeaux, stay away from this hotel!

Dear GlobeTrotting427400,

Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback about your stay at Mercure Bordeaux Gare Atlantic. We are sorry to hear that your stay with us was not up to your expectations.

At Mercure Bordeaux Gare Atlantic, we pride ourselves on providing exceptional customer service and it is disheartening to hear that a member of our team has not met the high standards of service our guests have come to expect from us. We strive to be warm and welcoming in all guest interactions, and we apologize if that was not your experience.

We understand that language barriers can make it difficult for our guests to get the best out of their visit, so we take care of ensuring our reception staff is adequately trained in both English and French languages. Unfortunately, it appears as though this did not meet your expectations during your visit this time around.

Thank you again for bringing this situation to our attention; we take all feedback seriously and will use it as an opportunity to improve the quality of services offered in order to ensure a better experience for all future guests.

I had 2 extreme experiences...the first and of course first impressions are the most lasting... we arrived to check in and I had to look around for someone to talk to and a young man came out of a small office and looked at me like I had 2 heads and said nothing... I asked if we could check in ( this was 1:15 pm or so) and all he said was "can't check in until 2 pm" and that was it never smiled, never ask any other questions... in other words probably the worst attitude of any hotel I have been in. The check out which of course was rather simple but there was a young women and young man with big smiles asking if they could help and check us out...complete opposite of the the check-in. thank you !

The Mercure hotel is conveniently located opposite the main train station of Bordeaux, Saint Jean. There is also a tram stop at this location. From the airport you can either take the shuttle bus for 8€ which goes direct from the airport to the train station or you can use the tram from the airport with 1 change at €1.70
The hotel has been recently renovated within the traditional historic building taking up a corner site. The ground floor is occupied by a bar bistro which always seemed popular and had good reviews. There was also a nice lounge sitting area which extended into the breakfast area. There is no reception in the traditional sense but instead a station which was always attentively attended to. The decoration was very modern with good attention to detail and plush furnishings.
As an Accor member I was graciously upgraded from a classic to a superior room. The room was a good size and had a separate seating area in a sunken part of the room accessed by a few steps. This allowed the benefit of the full length historic window to flood light into the room. The bed was extremely comfortable and was overlooked by a large screen TV. There was ample lighting options around the bed and usb ports in the side light. The room came with tea and coffee facilities and free water which could be refilled at the water station in the corridor. The bathroom was bright and modern with large walk in shower. The decor was modern and elegant and to a four star standard.
It should be noted that only the privilege rooms come with a fridge and coffee machine.
The WiFi had good open connectivity with speeds of up to 50mbs.
Overall this is a very pleasant hotel with easy access via tram to the rest of Bordeaux. The staff were very friendly and welcoming, the room comfortable and good value for money.

The location of the hotel was very good - it was opposite the station. The trams to the main tourist area were very close. Check in was fairly simple. The room was clean and a good size with air-con. Cold drinking water was provided. The shower room was clean with shower gel and hand soap provided. Good quality towels. The self-serve breakfast was good however there was nobody available to help with the coffee machine so we had to go to an office to ask. The person who came to help was rather brusque unlike the friendly receptionist.
