I was almost tempted to rate the hotel as three stars (average), but the friendly, helpful staff swung it. Our room was fine, spacious, comfortable and well-appointed. With the exception of the bathroom!
Hot water took ages to arrive at the shower, and nowhere to place shower gel, shampoo or whatever, but the worst aspect was the rather small, thin 'bath' and hand towels which rapidly became wet and did not dry out overnight. This compares poorly with the (much cheaper) B&B we had stayed at in Galloway for the previous few days where generous bath sheets and towels were the norm.
Meals were quite acceptable but not outstanding. The restaurant and bar food seemed to attract many locals: however the apparent popularity of the restaurant meant real difficulty in finding a parking space on occasions. We can only conclude that there is insufficient competition in the area to make it so busy. Looking at the other reviews led us to believe that it is slightly overrated and in need of more competition to raise standards.
