Owner description: Edinburgh Castle is a world famous icon of Scotland and part of the Old and New Towns of Edinburgh’s World Heritage Site. It was recently voted top UK Heritage Attraction in the British Travel Awards and is Scotland’s number one paid-for tourist attraction. This most famous of Scottish castles has a complex building history. The oldest part, St Margaret's Chapel, dates from the 12th century; the Great Hall was erected by James IV around 1510; the Half Moon Battery by the Regent Morton in the late 16th century; and the Scottish National War Memorial after the First World War. The castle houses the Honours (Crown Jewels) of Scotland, the Stone of Destiny, the famous 15th century gun Mons Meg, the One O' Clock Gun and the National War Museum of Scotland.

We went to the Castle and took advantage of the free talk given by a volunteer who picked out most of the main areas to visit. This was very useful and then, using this information and the free map given upon entry, we went at our own pace and looked more closely at all the things we found interesting. A great place to visit!

We went on a Tueaday morning and the line wasn't too bad. Great views and interesting exhibits. We were lucky and had a beautiful day. It might be a challenge in the rain. If yoy are in Edinburgh don't miss it.

We visited the castle on a cold windy rainy day that is typical for Scotland at this time of year.

Lots of exhibits are in doors so it makes for a good rainy day outing.

If you are a history buff you will need more then the usual 3 hours.

The Crown Jewels and the dungeons are a must see.
