The castle is situated right in the middle of town and is therefore very convenient to get to. It is in excellent condition and well worth a visit. It costs about £13 per adult.

The castle is a funny mixture of styles as it changed over the years. The Norman keep is just a ruin and I was disappointed in the military museum which seemed disorganized and set up primarily for children.

The apartments of the Earl of Bute are the star attraction (at extra cost) and something really special. Decorated in pseudo medieval style in bright colours and over the top decorations and artwork they are a treasure. The guided tour was excellent. As you might expect there are some pretty steep and narrow circular stairways.

Included in the admission price is a very good informative audio guide.

I contacted the castle before I arrived to enquire about disable parking and was allowed into the staff car park free of charge.

They achieved a nice blend of open wandering with guided tours. Castle itself is as warm and inviting as it is grand. If I were a queen, I could enjoy living there.
