This is a fabulous restaurant for lunch either hot or cold food. There is a lovely salad display- quiche , chicken, ham and fish, then you can have salad, coleslaw beetroot and rice salads to have with big jacket potatoes and cheese. Off course they are sumptuous deserts to choose from and the hot food ranges from pies curries, shepherds pie and fish and chips. The service is quick but the staff don't look too happy - could be due to the 2 managers hot on their tails . prices are good and tables get cleared quickly. There is tea and coffee as well and I saw someone with a coffee piled high with cream delicious. The only drawback to this place it is not disabled friendly as it is downstairs.

Outside in the street, Cardiff’s busy Queen Street, you will see a few A frames with menus on, alongside a doorway with stairs leading down. Nothing more, apart from the Pillars sign above the door. The steps lead to a basement that has to compared with Doctor Who’s Tardis... except it’s a restaurant and not a spaceship. Inside there’s a surprisingly large, specious restaurant, well lit and a unique atmosphere. It’s tastefully decorated, carpeted, with an overall welcoming feel to it. Having set the scene, remember it’s in the heart of the city centre, yet where else can you find home cooked, and I mean just that, steak and kidney pie, lasagne or cottage pie for around £6, even less in some cases if you buy two! So we are not talking about the Ritz here, nor Ritz prices, but is you are looking for a city centre retreat with a large and varied menu that’s not going to break the bank, then this is it. What’s nice about it is that it’s not part of a chain of restaurants, offering the same old burgers, chicken, pizza or pasta, which look and taste the same whether you are in Cardiff, Cheltenham or Cambridge. Pillars is one of a few family run businesses that pride themselves on hearty, tasty food at affordable prices. Whatever you want from salad to steak pie, breakfast to bangers n chips, or pasta to puds, you will find it at Pillars. Sadly it’s sister restaurant The Louis closed last year. Please make sure Pillars is in your menu when thinking of where to eat that’s different from all the usual chain of city centre outlets. For sheer value, selection and quality it has to be 5 stars.

This is kind of a school dinner place , but doesn't reflect on the taste , I had a toasted cheese Ham and pineapple sandwitch and it was lush. On very chunky bread though . My friends did not enjoy it at all , said they wouldn't come back but my sarnie was just fine . It's downstairs in a basement so a little dark and you have to have the code from your receipt to use the loo so keep hold of it as its got the code on .
