“Well worth a visit”
Review of St. Cybi Church

St. Cybi Church

No church should be viewed as a tourist venue as such but this was well worth visiting for its fascinating interior of various centuries although little remains of its earliest beginnings but it does contain fine artefacts and memorials.

I went here as I'd seen the Roman Fort signposted and I wasn't disappointed. It'd be lovely to see more touristy things here but just seeing it is lovely.
The old schoolhouse and the church aren't open unfortunately but there is plenty of things to see if your interests lie with history at all.

Thank Cheryl J

St Cybi's Church is a beacon of Welsh history and spirituality with its Celtic story. Built in the 1600s the church's stained glass windows are of particular note. There is a memorial within the church, dedicated to those fighting in WWI. A visitor's book bears witness to the diversity of visitors who come into the church. The original school built in the 1600s shares the site. An iconic centre in Holyhead the church has informative story boards providing the story of the original ministers in the area. A very interesting site.

Arrived there in the evening - and the church is locked, no acces possible. Good setting surrounded by the Roman Fort with walls at 15 foot, Perpendicular windows but really expected to get in

St Cybi's Church is built within the walls of a 3rd century Roman fort(let). In the mid-6th century the abandoned fort was given to St Cybi who established a monastery there. The present building was constructed on the site from about 1480 onwards. It is a lovely church with interesting artefacts, beautiful stained glass windows and a magnificent organ. There are also Victorian Gothic and Art Nouveau items. Lookout for the freize work in the porch and the Leper's Window in the nave. There are many fine architectural features internally and externally. You can see the walls and turrets of the Roman fort and enjoy great views over the harbour. There is a pay car park off Boston Street from where you get easy access. Read the plaque to right of entrance for useful info about the fort. You can be round both quickly but to appreciate the intricacies allow 1 hour+. Well worth the visit if in the area. Check opening times in advance. Holyhead is about 35/40 minutes drive from Bangor on mainland Wales.
