Description: The original Bombay cafes have almost all disappeared. Their faded elegance welcomed all: rich businessmen, sweaty taxi-wallas and courting couples. Fans turned slowly. Bentwood chairs were reflected in stained mirrors, next to sepia family portraits. Students had breakfast. Families dined. Lawyers read briefs. Writers found their characters. Opened early last century by Zoroastrian immigrants from Iran, there were almost four hundred cafes at their peak in the 1960s. Now, fewer than thirty remain. Their loss is much mourned by Bombayites.

We went to Dishoom,in Kings Cross on a Sunday night( we had reservations , or else we would have had to join the short queue outside), it was 6 pm.

We had been told that this was an attempt to recreate the Irani cafes of Bombay/ Mumbai, of yesteryear, and boy, did it succeed. Obviously someone had put a lot of effort into the decor, in the conversion of what looks like an old warehouse type space into a multilevel, spacious and vibrant atmosphere. The device was excellent, and the food very good. The bar has unusual indian Irani style cocktails to offer, and the East India gimlet, the Kalamansi smash( a the Bose sour, their own excellent pale ale, the the Viceroy old fashioned, along with good old indian kingfisher beer and Chai started off the evening in a very British Raj sort of way.
For the starters we had pau bhaji ( The Portuguese style bread , buttered, with a spicy concoction of mashed potato, onion, tomato and chillies), chilli cheese toast,Sheekh kebab, Prawn koliwada and okra fries. All were quintessential examples of colonial Indian and Mumbai Irani food, rendered authentically and tasty. For the mains we had chicken biryani , faith a, black dhal, garlic naan and rumbling rotisserie, and one of us wanted the Bedmi puri, which turned out to be a fairly lags portion. The deserts we ordered were Bun mask a pudding and chocolate pudding with chilli ice cream, all tantalizing and very good. We finished with filter coffee, which was passable. ( We misunderstood that this might be South Indian filer coffee, which most of us love. But it was not).
The ambience was amazingly true and nostalgic, with pictures of stars of the old Bombay, including old metal pedestal fans. The view of the bar from the sitting area next to the kitchen amazing. The basement was noisy, colorful and full of people;even the route to the toilets had signage which was uniquely Irani cafe and most interesting, to say the least.
The evening was memorable, the food good and the ambience great.

Excellent spot for brunch (have yet to go for lunch or dinner). Large, open space with a smaller, cozier spot in the basement. Get the Chai tea.

For a slow sunny morning, great walk along the canals from Camden to the King's Cross location! (About 20 minute walk)

Food is delicious. Whatever you order. We were a group of six and ordered a variety of dishes. A celebratory evening. Everything was delicious. The lamb biriyani was really good, although a little mild for my Hyderabadi palate.
Staff were extremely friendly and knew their menu well. Needed some pav or puris, we asked and they were only too happy to get some. Down side is they forgot one of the dishes we ordered. Didn't realise it till much later. But we were too full anyway.
