We happened to be walking through the courtyard at Horse Guards just before 4pm and encountered the nightly Dismounting Ceremony. All of the guard came on parade in the courtyard and were inspected by an officer, before the mounted guards took the horses back to the stables for the night. It was fascinating to watch the officer inspecting the men and the horses in full view of all the tourists! You can get quite close and we had a fantastic view as we happened to arrive just before it started. It seems to be a less well known experience than Changing of the Guard, so try and catch it when you are in London.

Horse Guards Parade is an excellent place to visit if you're ever in the area. There is a lot to see too. There is a museum which backs on to the working stables, which through a window, allows a behind the scenes view of the troopers of the Household Cavalry and their horses. If you arrive at 1100 you're likely to see the changing of the guard between the Life Guard and Blues and Royals regiments. If you arrive at around 1600 you will see the inspection/dismounting ceremony whereby all troops are inspected by an officer. Both very good displays.

However, please do respect the guards; all of whom are serving members of the British Army. Of course you are free to take pictures with them, stroke the horses etc. Do avoid touching the guards, getting in their way or stepping over any boundries.

Horses in London - just incredible. I walk around this area every few weeks. Just wonderful to the horses and the changing of the guards during a visit!
