It wasn't open when were were there and unfortunately, they didn't have the changing of the guards on the Tuesday. However, the palace itself is just magnificent to see and it's also nice to go and do the Mews tour which is the royal carriages, horse stable and cars that are used.

On my last day in london i visited most places in the city. one of my facourites was buckingham palace. i got of the tube at trafalgar square (this isnt the closest station) and walked towards st james park. i walked the grounds through it. its a great spot for photos. this leads you towards the mall on the way to buckingham palace. When i got there obviously it is packed with people. lots of crowds. definitely worth it though as the photo opportunities are great. i was lucky enough to catch the horse guards parade. i think this happened at around 11/11.30 am. just be careful crossing roads here as the traffic can be quite busy and there are certain spots of the road where you can and cant cross. the barriers will indicate where. overall enjoyable visit and well worth it.

Unfortunately on the day we decided to have a look at Buckingham Palace, the Changing of the Guard ceremony was on. Consequently we couldn't see anything but people! Once the ceremony was over and the crowds had dispersed, we were able to have a look at the Palace. It is an impressive building, and the parks and gardens surrounding it are beautiful. Well worth fighting the crowds to finally have a good look.

The gardens leading up to Buckingham Palace are simply beautiful and the gates hold particular significance if you are Canadian or Australian like we are. We got to witness a large number of horse riders walk past down the street which was a fascinating sight. We didn’t stay for the Changing of the Guard as it was the middle of summer and even an hour beforehand there were a large number of people beginning to arrive. If you want to watch the guards without the pressing crush of people, I would recommend the Guard’s Museum, we got to watch them go through their routine in the courtyard about an hour before the Changing of the Guard would take place and we were the only ones there so we got a fantastic view through the fence! Buckingham Palace itself is splendid, and everything you expect from a palace. The detail and wrought fences are breathtaking.
