We took the route from Coniston past Goat Water and approached from the rear of the mountain. The views from the top are well worth the effort to get there. Highly recommend!!!

Popular Southern fell, lots of routes , mines, mine workings and quarrys to explore. Usually busy summit

We drove up as far as we could and got out of the car to walk a few metres further. We couldn't walk far as I'd hurt my knee a couple of days earlier.
We could see down towards the Lake and it was very pretty. Would definitely walk to the peak next time.

I am NOT a walker but did the old man, the long route from Coniston town centre, over Dow then on to the old man. You can cheat and miss a mile by driving up to the car park! We had a lovely dry sunny day. For me the hardest point walking down the short direct route. This is quite steep in places and glad that we did not go up that way. A huge sense of achievement that I did it.

Completed this walk with out 2 daughters (11 & 8). We took a linear route, from the Walna Scar car park (arrive early - this gets very busy and we saw a couple of cars get stuck in the soft ground trying to eke out another parking space) up to the summit and back the same way.
The walk up was achievable but quite tricky in places; made seasonably harder due to ice and snow on the upper parts of the path!
However, it was the walk down which was in my view harder as it is nearly all clambering down rocks or walking on shifting scree which is not a particularly pleasant experience.
That said, we chose a fine sunny day and the views from the top and en route were stunning - right over the Windermere and south to the coastline.
So overall I would recommend the walk for the views and achievement but it's not one which will become a favourite walk.
