This little house is not very easy to find, even with 2 sat navs doing their stuff! Once found, however, the interior more than makes up for the few times round the block you need to go to finally work out how to access it. The house was spotlessly clean, with an extremely well equipped kitchen, high quality bed linen and towels and some really lovely touches eg. Fresh roses in the living room, an abundance of fresh fruit, and a bottle of wine in the fridge.
The owners meally have thought of absolutely everything, even providing dishwasher and washing machine tabs (highly unusual in a holiday let), useful information, a beautiful and immaculate, postage stamp size garden etc.
The immediate area is extremely run down and has the air of deprivation, but the neighbours were extremely quiet and, sitting in the garden, with the birds singing and surrounded by trees, you could be forgiven for thinking you were in the middle of the country.
Our only challenge was that the mattresses were very springy and we all found them uncomfortable. It might be useful too, to have more comfortable seating in the living room, as the sofa, whilst comfortable, will seat only 3 people at the most. Whilst it is useful to be able to sit round the large dining table together, it would also be nice to relax in a comfortable chair in the evening.
Overall, this house is beautiful....probably the cleanest holiday let we've ever stayed in. Access was easy via the key safe and xommunication with Lee was excellent.
Thank you very much and we would highly recommend this house for a short stay.
All you could possibly need.Clean, modern house. Well appointed. Five adults stayed happily for 3 days. All our requirements met. Thank you
Five Aussies and a Pom shared this lovely mews house for three weeks whilst following the Women’s Cricket World Cup at Gloucester County Ground. I’m not kidding – the Mews is not easy to find, but after a couple of circuits we uncovered this hidden gem - enter Whitefield Avenue from Speedwell Road and the Mews is tucked away off to the right. You cannot drive up from bottom end of the Avenue – it is one way. Access to the key is via a key safe, then there are two sets of keys located inside.
It is a compact, clean and well equipped 3 bedroom house. The kitchen is small, but contains everything you need including large fridge, dishwasher, lots of cutlery and good selection of glassware. It really only accommodates 2 people comfortably which ensures too many cooks don’t have the chance to spoil the broth! There is a second loo on the ground floor – very handy with 6 of us in the house for three weeks. A washing machine/dryer combo is hidden away under the stairs and a storage cupboard near the front door has hanging space, ironing board, iron and dustpan and brush. The addition of a hand held (dustbuster type) vacuum cleaner would be handy to clean up. Also, a small fold up clothes hanging rack would also be helpful for items that cannot be placed in the dryer (for us Aussies, a clothes dryer is a foreign object and we prefer drying outdoors). We rigged up a line in the garden which worked well! The lounge room contains a good size dining table, tv, DVD player and free wi fi. There is a small well maintained garden with outside setting.
There is one car park space directly outside the house and on advice from Lee, our second car was parked next to the wood store opposite the house.
Upstairs there are two double bedrooms, the front being quite small, L shaped and more suited to one person occupancy. Second bedroom is a good size, but pick of the bedrooms is the top room (if you don’t mind the climb) – it is large, brght and airy. We needed a single bed for one of group and owner, Lee obliged with a good quality roll away bed which was much appreciated, the top room was big enough to accommodate this extra bed. There is plenty of hanging space in all bedrooms with hairdryers available. A large storage cupboard at the top of the main stairs is handy to store suitcases and bags, giving each bedroom a bit more space. The large main bathroom has a good shower over the bath – we found the shower screen seal was not effective, allowing a steady stream of water to spill out over the floor. This was a real nuisance and required regular mopping up. A partial solution was to place a small towel along the side of the bath under the screen – this slowed down the flow somewhat, but a more permanent solution is needed. A grab rail to assist getting out of the bath would be handy. The extractor fan is not very effective and created a sauna effect after only a couple of showers.
A starter pack of milk, tea and coffee was welcome as were dishwasher tablets and loo paper – sufficient if you are only staying for a short period. As we were staying for 3 weeks, we appreciated the weekly change of sheets and towels.
As for the surrounding area – Lodge Causeway shops, a 5 minute drive away has a great bakery (Parsons), newsagent, post office, small Tesco and couple of take aways – the Taste of the Orient provided good quality Chinese food and they deliver.
There are two buses (6 &7) from the main roads above and below Whitefield Avenue that take you into the city centre – about 30 mins away. There is a £4 all day ticket which is good value. Check out the ferries for a great look at the city from the water – you can take the ferry to SS Great Britain – worth a visit. For travel further afield, there was a good value £6.50 return ticket that got us into the bus station and onto Bath, about 50 minutes away. Wells is another great spot worth a visit with a similar good value bus ticket. Trains might be quicker, but expensive.
On line booking and payment was straightforward and communication with Lee was very efficient and friendly – questions sent through the online rental inbox were answered quickly.
Overall, we were very comfortable and had a great stay at the Mews. We have no hesitation in recommending it for long or short stays.
The house was perfect for our weekend getaway. The owner was very accommodating with flexible check in/out times. Everything that we needed was available including internet, condiments, bedding, duvets ect. We had no problems and the house itself was a very clean, modern and well set up house. Very comfortable and enjoyable stay and not too far from amenities and town.
