This old colonial port town is filled with history and historic architecture. The main Beach Street is like a wild Wild West set in the South Pacific. The place will intrigue historians, archaeologists, architects and heritage enthusiasts for sure. We didn’t have enough time but there are heaps of hikes, walks, waterfalls and villages to visit. Locals are super friendly and will say bula to you. It’s safe to walk around day and night. It is idyllic and peaceful and relaxing for anyone who is looking for a break from a hectic life. The community spirit is amazing and so is the natural beauty.
The town or the island is not on the popular tourist track as it doesn’t have the kind of resorts that main island has but it’s a perfect place to see real Fiji outside the resorts.
Highly recommend spending at 2-4 days. Taxis on the island are so cheap you can take them to go around everywhere.
Levuka will give you a good idea of how the first European colonists made themselves comfortable in the South Pacific. It'd look like the setting of a Western movie if it wasn't for the lovely Fijian women selling their produce on the market. We had fun exploring the small town museum and discovering the many 'firsts' Levuka proudly owns (first bank, first school, first post office etc). While there isn't much to do except wandering up and down the street, looking at old buildings, watching people and having a cold drink or ice-cream, a visit to Levuka is a pleasant enough way of spending a couple of hours on Ovalau.
This was a disappointing experience. May have been a great little town in it's heyday 150 years ago. It is now a derelict and very sad place. A lot of work needs to be done to make it a tourist attraction and justify it's inclusion as a world heritage listing site.
We have just arrived back in New Zealand after spending about two weeks in Levuka on Ovalau Island.
For anyone interested in visiting the former capital and World Heritage town, Venu Shipping is a much more passenger-friendly bus/ferry service - on the good ship, the St Mary leaving on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays at 11am and arriving in Levuka Port at 3.30pm.
It leaves the Suva Bus Stop and tickets can be bought from the St Mary kiosk in the car park. The return journey leaves Levuka on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at 7.15am, arriving in Suva at midday. Tickets cost FJD $25 per person.
By comparison, the Patterson Bus/Ferry has a daily service and gets into Levuka via Buresala (the opposite side of the island) at dusk. The bus leaves at 4.30 am from Levuka and gets in to Suva at 8.30am. This is a daily service, also leaving and returning to the Suva Bus Stop.
A great place to spend at least 3 days if you are interested in the history of the South Pacific. People are friendly and the place is not touristy. We spent a day exploring the town, the second day we went on Epi's tour and would have liked a third day to take a trip around the whole island. We felt safe the whole time and expect to visit again.
Good place to stock up if you've arrived by yacht. Some things are surprisingly cheap, and some expensive - don't except European food here until you pay top dollar. Bread is very, very fresh. Can buy alcohol here too.
