Locanda Baroni is a very nice hotel and restaurant in the woods of the Foreste Casentinesi protected area. Rooms are simple but clean and have very authentic atmosphere. The mattresses were okay (but could be changed to improve the sleep quality). In the restaurant, tasty local food was prepared and breakfast was served in a nice caffetteria. Locanda Baroni is a perfect place to relax in a quiet place with a long history.

The hotel is situated right opposite the monastery. Thus an ideal location to visit the monastery, pharmacy and hermitage.
The surrounding forest is extensive and is excellent for a walking holiday. We even saw a deer one night as we were driving back to the hotel through the forest. The hotel itself was formerly a lodge for the monks, before the monastery was completed. It is thus a protected historical building and no changes or modern improvements can be made to it.Consequently we found the bedroom quite cold inspite of a radiator beneath the window .We would thus recommend staying at the hotel in the warmer months ,especially in summer but not in the winter. The lunch at the restaurant was good ,even for us vegetarians!

My family and I stayed at the Locanda dei Baroni on a walking trip between Firenze and Santuario della Verna along the way of St Francis.

This quaint hotel feels like it has had a long, rich history. Our room was comfortable and although it was simple the price was very reasonable.

What we enjoyed most of all here was the meal. We shared a chianina beef bistecca and it was just terrific!

Hi there mlchabot and thank's for sharing your experience here. Nice location, comfortable, good price...what else? I know: a terrific Chianina Beef steack to share with friends. Thank's a lot and all the best for your pilgrimage!

Greeted by the host Andrea, one of three brothers running the two Baroni restaurants in the area. Visited first for a great cold beer after doing the park nature walk that ends near the place and then for a casual dinner the next evening. Friendly with enough English to communicate and laugh throughout. Had the wild boar shank with polenta fries. Perfect. Pricing not indicative of its potentially tourist location if you consider 20 km up a winding road from Poppi a tourist spot. The monastery is steps away and draws many to its natural pharmacy products

I walked in from an uphill 17km hike to a warm welcome from Andrea Baroni. He lit the fire and showed me to my room, beautifully renovated. It is such a peaceful place, bathed for centuries in prayer by the nuns of the convent next door, and the monks up the hill. The dinner was wonderful home cooked food. I slept so well. Breakfast was much more substantial than the usual biscuit and coffee you get in Italy. At this quiet time of year I could not think of anywhere more restful and welcoming.
