We arrived in Normandy on a sunny afternoon and drove straight to our home for the next two weeks, La Belle Grange. The drive took us through delightful French villages, vast open countryside and farmland framed by a sweeping blue sky. The land surrounding La Belle Grange showed off apple and pear trees with fruit ready for the picking.
Once inside the recently converted barn we were impressed by the high oak beamed ceiling, spacious open plan living and dining space and tasteful décor. Along with, among other things, the wood fired burning stove, large dining table, and modern fully equipped kitchen we found La Belle Grange more than met our expectations for a great rustic retreat. We soon settled into our holiday home and began to relax and unwind. We found the vast open space and views, the silence of this rural location and the starlit nights particularly captivating.
For the practicality of self catering; day to day supplies were readily at hand in the nearby pretty market town of Brecey which has two supermarkets along with smaller shops selling local produce. The nearby larger town of Avranche offers a wide selection of great shops, cafes and restaurants.
The house is well placed for visiting picturesque villages and market towns. Villagers are very friendly and really did appreciate any attempt by us to converse in our limited French vocabulary. We loved our drives along the coastal road and visits to the beach followed by a great meal in one of the many coastal restaurants with amazing views of Mont St Michel.
These are just words though. It is the feelings and the memories we took away with us. France... La Belle Grange. Viva la difference! For us this difference was such a very special experience which we will remember for a long time. We are looking forward to returning very soon.
