Good choice if looking for a hotel in Markham, Ontario

4.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed 14 Jul 2023via mobile
My wife and I recently spent three nights at the TownPlace Suites hotel in Markham, Ontario. We booked the room with our Bonvoy points, so I can’t comment on price.

Markham is a suburb about 15 miles north of Toronto. We picked this location since it was near relatives we were visiting. It’s located on a fairly busy highway with various commercial businesses nearby. There is a Chinese restaurant (QJD Peking Duck), which we did not visit, on the first floor.

The thirteen-story building actually holds two Marriott properties: Courtyard by Marriott on floors 2 - 8 and TownPlace on floors 9 - 14. The registration desk serves both hotels. The lobby has several areas for socializing. There also is a Bistro/Bar area. Conference rooms, a business center and a spa are off to the side. A fitness center and indoor pool are on the lower level.

Wifi is free. Surprisingly, parking is not. Signs say that it costs $6 Canadian per day to park in the attached multi-level garage, but we apparently were not charged.

Check-in was courteous and efficient. You need your keycard to access the elevator.

TIP: There is no 13th floor; the elevator buttons go from 12 to 14!

We were assigned room 915.

TIP: the room was almost across the hall from the ice machine and one wall of the room directly abutted the elevator bank. While the noise was neglible, you might want to keep this in mind if you’re a very light sleeper.

The room was clean and decorated in what I would call ikea style. It was like living in a studio apartment. A flat screen TV was on a two-drawer chest/dresser. A wall-mounted desk had overhead shelving, a vertical cupboard, desk chair and rollout table.

The kitchen section had a sink, two-burner electric range top, coffee pot, microwave, dishwasher (!) and fairly large refrigerator. There were multiple cabinets and drawers filled with practically every kitchen item you’d need: pots, pans, dishes, flatware, soap, etc. And if they’re still something you might need, chances are you can get it from the front desk. (See pic.)

A full-size closet contained an iron/ironing board. No sign of a safe.

The sitting area contained a loveseat, ottoman and floor lamp.

The king-size bed had five pillows. The bed was a little soft, but comfortable. It was flanked by nightstands and wall-mounted lamps with electric outlets.

The bathroom was average-sized. The vanity had lots of counter space and several drawers. And a hair dryer. The shower was quite large, taking up about a third of the room. There was wall-mounted hand soap and hair/body wash (in the shower) by ALICE & Co+ botanicals. Shower pressure and temperature were fine.

TIP: Don’t be alarmed when you flush the toilet - the sound is comparable to that generated by an airplane commode.

Breakfast was included with the room and was served on the 14th floor. (Also requiring keycard access.) The offerings consisted of the usual combination of hot & cold items.

Overall, we were very pleased with our stay and would recommend it if you are looking for lodging in the Markham area.

Strange that there no reviews from 2022...The room is ok, but internet is very slow at peak times. Breakfast has the same eggs and sausage everyday. No fresh fruit. Waffle station. Front desk personnel were very friendly

This hotel is clean, well organized, has lots of parking. Not only this but, Lance at the bar was absolutely amazing, he saw that I loved the cherries in my friends Manhattan and brought be me over a ramaken of them! I was truly amazed by their customer service. Thank you so so much!

Terrible customer service. We always have employees that go above and beyond with our rate accommodations however this place has front desk employees who go below and lower except for the one female who is in charge of the kitchen. They should learn how to accommodate customers from the kitchen lady. Shame on their front desk staff.

Room tip: Do not book here they will charge you more than what you would normally pay. There is low diversification in employees

A great and updated room with a kitchenette. We were able to make bacon and eggs every morning before going out to enjoy the city pass. Downfall was that our room card was deactivated on day two and we were staying 2 nights, so we had to go and get new cards. Also, we did not have enough towels or coffee for 2 day, just 1. Otherwise great location with very friendly staff. Lots of restaurant choices in the area as well. I would definitely recommend this hotel.

Room tip: Do not count on a cart being available for check out, but if you ask for a cart and they are not available someone will help you carry your luggage down.

This was the second overnight stay at this hotel for us, with the first one being a good experience last year, and this one being a terrible experience for us. The only positive thing I can say about this hotel is that their staff are very courteous, respectful and accommodating. And their swimming pool is really good, although the water is bit too cold. But other than that, looks like this hotel is on a negative trajectory of multiple maintenance issues. The rooms, although clean, area not spacious so would not recommend staying here for more than a day.

When we checked into our room, right away we noticed that the room was dark on one side and sure enough it was due to a missing bulb in a light fixture. Secondly, we found out that the refrigerator in our room was not working as it was not cooling anything inside. The front desk staff were kind enough to move us to another room when we reported these issues. However, our second room had another major issue. While the lighting in this room was better and the refrigerator was working, the shower drain was all clogged up such that the water kept filling up in the tub. I noticed this when giving our toddler a bath so I called guest services right away. They sent maintenance up to our room and he had to work on it for at least 10 minutes taking out all the hair from the drain manually as he did not have a draining solution (like Drano) to clear up the clog. All of this while our toddler was half done taking his bath standing on the side feeling cold with only a towel wrapped around him. Terrible experience for him and us! Eventually, the drain issue did get resolved and we were able to all take a shower afterwards.

With all of these issues experienced at this hotel, we definitely will not be coming back.
