This narrow gauge railroad just a short drive from downtown Auckland, was built in order to get workers up to dams that were built in order to supply water to the populated areas, as well as to then maintain the water supply pipe itself. This is now a fantastic touristic opportunity that I don't think too many people know about. Fortunately for us, it was an included stop on our Celebrity Cruises shore excursion out of Auckland. The train cars are adorable, nearly 'toy like', as each little car itself holds only two people. The top side half of each car is open, and the roof is glass - allowing clear viewing of the glowworms that are in most of the many tunnels that we traveled through. The train stops several times on it's way up, and down, to allow you to get out, walk around, and take photos of the breathtaking scenery. The trees and the plants, the winding bridges, the seclusion - spectacular! A must do!
