Given its pole position on Grand Anse beach, it could be so much more...

3.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed 28 Apr 2024
Coyaba Beach is to some extent in no-man's land; as the tile suggests, in such a prime location the potential is there to be so much better than it is right now.

There are, of course, both positives and negatives - that's what guests reviews are there for, as a platform to express them for future guests' interests as well as for management to use for feedback purposes.

We are both in our 60s, and it is fair and quite accurate to say that we were probably one of the youngest English people staying there. It might be a tad unfair to nickname the hotel as "The Coyaba Old Folks Home", but frankly this seems to be the overall impression as most of the guests were in their 70s or older, and with little to offer younger or more active guests.

I can only report as we find - a pleasant enough hotel, but lacking in staff helpfulness and friendliness at times, and with a general air of complacency in responding to any issues. As a previous correspondent has pointed out, the rooms are a bit tired, and the beds not the most comfortable. The food again was somewhat bland and with not a huge variety, though being even-handed it was generally tasty and pleasant.

I did raise the matter of the tennis court at the front of the hotel which was frankly not fit for purpose, but I can see that for the management this is not a huge priority given the age-range of most guests staying there.

A factor that Coyaba doesn't have much influence over is the constant pounding and pummelling of music from nearby outside bars and parties, but it affected the quality of our stay and has to be mentioned as this was an issue for us, and probably others too. There was also constant, intrusive music in the restaurants and particularly the pool bar - mainly we assume for the benefit of the staff, given the demographic of the guests.

As a footnote to the management (whom we met and found very willing to listen) is to decide what Coyaba is to be - a budget to mid-range hotel mainly for the elderly, or to upgrade and remodel the hotel into something more sophisticated and make use of its prime position on one of the finest beach locations in the Caribbean.

Kind regards

David & Caroline

I have rated this 5* although there are a couple of things to be made aware of.
Before this trip I didn’t want to come back to the Caribbean due to the lack of service in several places I have been.
This place has changed my mind, research and more research is what’s needed.
The rooms are dated but perfectly ok and large.
The gym (I am a frequent flyer), is very dated with half of the machines not working correctly and the pulley cables of the machine weights have stretched making them poor to use.
Then the rest, the staff were fabulous, attentive and there are plenty of them, making sure you feel well looked after.
The food was fabulous, I didn’t not have one meal that was anything but great. Some reviews say there isn’t much on offer, I found it to be plentifully on choice. The food, plates and serving spoons all kept covered which gives you peace of mind.
The grounds are beautiful, it is dry season so the grass isn’t very green but the gardens are well looked after.
The beach is stunning and right in front of the hotel.
The on site dive centre (eco dive) is great, I reviewed them separately.
Thanks to all the staff for making our holiday so enjoyable, I understand why so many people I spoke to while here come back year after year.

I have traveled to over 40 countries in my lifetime and stayed in various hotels in those countries but ABSOLUTELY NONE compares to Coyaba Beach Resort in Grenada in terms of Hospitality, Good Food and most of all WONDERFUL STAFF! From the warm yet fun greeting by Ms. Lystra and her crew at the front desk, to the staff in the restaurants, to Roderick and the Grounds staff, the friendliness and hospitality at the Resort was unsurpassed. If you desire true friendly real genuine Caribbean Hospitality i can think of no better place than Coyaba Beach Resort, Grand Anse, St. Georges, Grenada.

This is a small family owned and run hotel and has a family feel. We were pleased with our choice because we’d wanted to get a feeling for Grenada and not just stay in a standard hotel that could be anywhere. The hotel grounds felt very spacious and gave the impression not many people were staying there, although at meal times you realised there were more people than you thought.

Staff - there were so many staff all of which were friendly, and even more so when you engaged them in conversation

Food - more choice than expected and large portions. Lunch a la carte at the pool side restaurant served pizzas, burgers, sandwiches and chips, fish and chips. Evening meal was a la carte on 5 nights out of 7, there were two menus, one changed daily and one stayed the same. We had plenty of choice without having to choose any ‘premium options’ (we were on standard all inclusive)

Drinks - excellent choice, over 20 alcoholic cocktails and 10 non alcoholic cocktails to choose from on standard all inclusive. House wine was very drinkable. Children asked for milkshakes which weren’t even on the menu and these were made for them. Staff were very good at asking if you would like more drinks. It was a very civilised resort, no one seemed to drink too much despite the drinks being free flowing if you wanted them.

Beach - we loved being able to sit on the beach behind the fence in the resort. There was constant security at the beach entrance so if we’d needed someone to carry our sun loungers onto the main beach there would have been someone willing to help. The beach was not too busy with locals and felt safe.

Gardens - exceeded our expectations, very well kept and attracted a variety of birds.
Gardeners were friendly.

On-site dive centre (Eco Dive) - the sea was a bit rougher than we’d expected so we only took a kayak out once, but we did do a scuba diving trip which was excellent

Seaweed - there was seaweed for 48 hours during our trip, this was cleared up after it had finished washing up on the beach. A previous reviewer complained about this but they neglected to mention it was Easter weekend, Grenada was hosting the Carifta games that weekend and seaweed is a rare occurrence on Grand Anse so it is likely they are not as accustomed to clearing it up as other resorts around the world.

Rooms - as other people have said the rooms are dated but we purposely did not choose a modern chain hotel because we wanted a more traditional Caribbean experience, so this was fine for us. Aircon was excellent.

Trips - we arrived on Good Friday and anticipated that given it was a bank holiday weekend we may need to make arrangements for trips etc in advance of our arrival at the hotel, this worked well and we arranged Scuba Diving with the on-site EcoDive centre for Easter Sunday and an island tour for the Tuesday (a previous reviewer blamed the hotel for their bookings desk not being fully open over the bank holiday weekend, they should have realised it was Easter and planned ahead!)

All in all a perfect hotel choice for us and we’d recommend it (unless you are just going for a smart hotel room)

Honestly, this place is probably more like 2.5 stars. Let's start with the positives:
-The rooms are clean and the housekeeping staff diligent, coming in to tidy up several times a day.
-It is one of the few relatively affordable resorts directly on Grand Anse beach, which I hear is usually spectacular(though when we were there, the water was cloudy and choked w/ sargassum, as was the beach)
-The food was good, but not great. Despite my family having several culinary restrictions, there was always something for everyone to eat.

Now, for the negatives:
-The hotel staff makes no effort to clear sargassum from the beach. In the past, any hotel I've stayed at w/ this issue works diligently to keep the beach as clear as possible, and I saw this happening at resorts further down the beach. But Coyaba just lets it pile up.
-The resort feels worn and down-at-the-heels, and is in desperate need of a makeover, especially at the current price point. While it is relatively affordable compared to other resorts on Grand Anse, it was not cheap. For nearly $500/night, I expect the decor and facilities to be much more modern and up to date. Instead, it feels like the rooms haven't been renovated or refurbished since the resort opened in the '80s.
-We got there on a Saturday. They have two lovely concierge desks in the lobby, and I was excited to sit down at one of them and plan some activities for the week. However, I was told w/ a shrug by the front desk that the concierge wouldn't be back until "maybe Tuesday." Needless to say, we were only staying until Weds. So we were on our own as far as booking excursions, etc.
-Speaking of the staff, w/ the exception of a few lovely dining room servers, they were not very friendly and - especially at the front desk - made you feel like you were a bother when making simple requests like asking for them to call a taxi. The beach staff did not set up chairs for guests, but instead stood and watched as you struggled to drag chairs from the resort to the beach.

We have just got home from an excellent 2 week holiday at Coyaba Beach Grenada set on one of the best beaches Grand Anse
Our room was 240 beautiful view overlooking the gardens and the sea,the sunsets were amazing
The heartbeat of the hotel is most definitely the staff i will mention a few and I apologize for those i've left out.
Kenton great guy loves the island and makes a mean Rum Punch
Jarvis knockout personality
Anthony and Chad who looked after us daily
Ostra started the day we arrived an asset without a doubt
Vanburn who managed the service with a huge smile.
The food was served in 2 restaurants which were both waiter service and al a carte
There was new menu daily
The food was tasty , we couldn't complain.
Our room was spacious however i feel some TLC would improve the ambience.
There was occasional entertainment including a singer accompanied by a guy on keyboard I didn't get their names they were really talented.
A special mention to the dancers led by Bambi whose enthusiasm, passion and energy was a joy to watch
Get someone to take you around the island, the Grenadians are very patriotic this is infectious. Waterfalls, lake, mountains, spices, rum distillery, chocolate factory and much more.It is worth the effort.
All in all this was a relaxing and enjoyable visit.
